Just bought an 07 C2S - Porsche cert of auth says it has M96 engine, what's up?
Hey guys, just bought an 07 C2S on BaT with 7K miles. Don't have the car yet so can't check the engine block number. But the pic of the certificate of authenticity from Porsche says the engine code is M96 (see attached pic).

the M96 DOES NOT have an electronic dipstick.
So, it is possible that if they are right, you either have a conventional dipstick, or an electronic one.
If you have an electronic one, your motor is an M97...so, there are 2 cross referenceable sources.
(edit: my car is a 2006 and DOES NOT have a conventional dipstick...I guess some cars have BOTH!?)
Can you post pictures?
What I am thinking is:
1. It is an S and the certificate is wrong. It has an M97
2. It is a BASE and has the 3.6 M96...and the certificate is wrong.
therefore,
The certificate is wrong...lol. But any pics. of the car will make it easy to see.
If you are worried about privacy for any reason, just crop it to see the brakes specifically.

Not to derail too much, but that oil sensing part of the article seems inaccurate. My 2006 C2 has a motor stamped with M96, and only has electronic oil level sensing (no dipstick). Depending on where the car is in the shipment process, it's probably simplest to ask them to just peek under and check.
My 2006 C4 built/production date in June 2006 has M/96 Engine. Your Production date is 7/12/2006 so M/96 no surprise IF it were not an "S".
Essentially your car is a 2006 w/2007 date stuck to it but it is a wonder why your "S" engine has an M/96 stamp.

yeah, IDK, it is just from the thread on how to look under your car for the serial number. I get that the OP does not physically have the car in front of him as well.

^^Those are some oddball looking Serial# stamps? Never seen that before - off center not the tiny dots making up the numerals?
Think I recall reading that's from when the dealer replaces the engine. The first part is on the engine from the factory but then the dealer adds the numbers (and not very well apparently). Or maybe not, memory is a bit fuzzy on this one.
I didn't mean to derail the conversation, I was just saying, there is a serial number on the bottom of the engine with a link to the thread about it and a picture taken from that thread.
I'm sure you know this, but your car has an engine that was replaced by Porsche sometime in its life and what the AT in the engine serial number means.
I had an incorrect certificate that stated I had an M96. Details: I ordered a C2S in late October 2005, production was completed on January 25, 2006, and I took delivery on Feb. 20, 2206. Upon checking underneath - not the actual number, I saw an M97 stamped on the bottom not far from the oil drain plug. So I got back to PCNA, sent them a picture of it, and they sent me a corrected certificate. I only found out my actual engine serial number recently - I couldn't read it on the tab attached to the engine, but PCNA sent me the number: M978/03 68612167. Four possibilities in all this: 1) worst case - production of new 911's was going like hotcakes, so maybe proper engines were not installed; 2) changeover from M96 to M97 for 3.8L S engine led to the last M96's being installed; 3) engine mislabeling due to stampings on engine parts - e.g., M96 stampings being used on engines with M97 parts or vice versa; or, 4) bad paper work - think this was most likely in my case.

Thanks for sharing your experience. I did some googling for rennlist threads on the subject, and there are many reports of CoAs being wrong, so that's my assumption. Once the car's delivered, I'll confirm, and try to get PCNA to send me a corrected certificate.
Has anyone been successful getting PCNA to send them a corrected cert on a used car purchase (i.e. not original owner?).
(I know the certs aren't that important, but it can't hurt and might help to have a correct one if I ever sell it in the future.)
