So excited.
The payment part was really nice, it made it so I never felt the spend at all financially. That will be a downside to the LN program, having to fork out all of that $ at once.

I wonder if I should sell my 997.2 and get a 997.1 so I can get a R series engine 😂. Jake has said he hates working on the 9a1

Unless you get a special car, it doesn't sound like R-series will be something that can be purchased. I WONT and DONT speak for FSI. But in our conversations, it doesn't sound like it's a engine that will be done much anymore. Parts availability being major pain as well as these are built by only jake and he only wants to do a couple a year. But that's something you'll have to speak with him about directly.

I’m still years away if I’m going to do it. Who knows maybe he allows some other R series engines to be built by his most trusted staff. With the merger with LN engineering i think a lot of things might change.

Absolutely. However, I'm just relaying things as I know it currently. But you would figure, with the amount of money the R series costs, that there has to be at least a limited market there.

For those who were curious, it looks like first engine under the new program comes available on January 10th. It is a stage II 4.0. You have to be prequalified to get access to purchase it and it looks like it will be right around $40k. Core has to be usable, only failure allowed is bore scoring.

And you have to jump quick. No bs allowed. Installation at a fsi approved garage.

yeah came in a bit more than was expecting, but apparently has all internal options included, but that i guess keeps it in line with the "8K of extras" you added to yours. we wont have access to the actual specs until after the new years. im really hoping they dont make them all with the "all options included".

The pistons and balancing are maybe $1500-2k. The IPD Plenum and TB $1,100. I assume it also has a new starter, starter wire, and plastic tubing so that is another $1,200. If it has his coils another $800. If he did all new sensors then I think that was another $2k. I didn’t do the pistons because he couldn’t get them at that time and the ones he uses are pretty good. I didn’t do the starter, but I know mine was working well, TBH after looking at access to if it goes I will wish I had. I bought my own coils off of Pelican for $250 or so and did them before putting the motor in. I also didn’t do sensors because I wasn’t having issues, but this wasn’t your motor so you don’t know the mileage/details, so I think I might want new sensors. I think the only thing I would consider doing without is the upgraded pistons and then maybe do OEM Bosch Coils, but that will only save like $1,200-1,300.

Also from my understanding he is not doing a fixed price all of the engines will be based on the cost to build, so as that fluctuates so could the price of each engine.

The R-Series is something that only Jake builds. These take so much time that there’s no way it would be profitable to pay an employee to do the work. I am certain he only does these because he wants to spend that much time to make something stunningly perfect. I know the R43 that he just finished yesterday had over 200 hours of his life into it. He does every part of these and even built the full intake and exhaust for this most recent one.
FSI shrank things and slowed down a lot on purpose. The remaining staff is comprised of only the longest time employees, the newest having been there for 10 years. Don’t expect a ton of engines to be built, everyone wants a break, and to go back to the way things were before the business exploded. Jake immediately reduced engine build volume by 50% with the new program.
Now each engine gets more time into it than ever before, along with fully documented specifications and a full engine build log. Since there’s no commitments and no schedule, things are done when they are done and cost whatever they cost.

At around 1300 miles and am loving every drive. I still giggle if I roll on the throttle at 4k. The power, the smoothness, the sound just can’t be beat. They did release the first engine through the new program, which sold in less than 2 minutes for $39k. So if you are in the market be sure to get prequalified and stay on top of the release of the motors.

Charles Navarro is really in his element in this feature about LN from Porsche Club of America. Check it out.
