Help Diagnosing Ticking Sound

That last video doesn’t sound good to me but get an expert’s advise. Is this a 997.1 or .2?
I would open a ticket at Flat 6 Innovations and attach that video. Best of luck.

Thanks, I will probably do that to see what Jake thinks. I got the Durametric to work and no codes or anything to go by. I think next I am going to pull a little oil and send it for a UOA and check the magnetic drain plug.

In one of Jake's videos, he isolates the tick using a stethoscope. From underneath, he probes each cylinder. It was clear. I suspect you are not putting the stethoscope in the right places. I don't know which video it was.... you can go fishing on his YouTube channel.

Do 997.1s have lifter issues? From videos I’ve seen they both sound the same just like OP’s.

For the tapping......What oil are you running in the car? I may be in the minority, but if it isn't the factory fill of Mobile 1 0w-40, change back to the factory fill of Mobile 1 0w-40. You can also add a can of this stuff if you are feeling frisky....... https://www.fcpeuro.com/products/mos...ui-moly-lm2009.
As for the car running poorly, I would try and get that sorted out as first priority.

I change my opinion with the new videos, that sounds like scoring. You need to scope it asap. Would do #6 through the plug hole.

rtl has a good ear for scoring. The new videos now have the rhythmic knock knock knock sound from scored bores. Send an oil sample off and see if it's much higher in Aluminum than prior samples and scope #6. Rotate the motor so the piston is as far down in the bore as yuu can get it. Also look for any silver spots on top of the piston which could be vaporized and melted aluminum that ends up on the top of the piston.

It sounds like classic "piston slap" as is described in the video series. Assume this is a 997.1 and not 9a1 engine.

Opened a ticket with Jake and he said scoring as well. It just seems odd that it happened so suddenly with zero symptoms and still no smoke from the exhaust. Plus I am fairly certain the sound is from Bank 1 cylinder 2 area. I sent a vid to a local Indy who is really good and chatted with him a bit. I think next step is to pull an oil sample, check the magnetic plug, and cut open the filter to figure out what I am dealing with.

If you haven't already done so, watch Jake's entire bore scoring video series. Sorry this is happening and hopefully you get many many more enjoyable miles.

You can do this all on rhino ramps.

I disagree with course of action go straight to scope in the easiest manner, when you hear it this bad, you can see it from the top. This is what you need to do, go on amazon and order this- https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0...?ie=UTF8&psc=1 then, remove the two torx holding the passenger side coil pack heat shield, slip it out from between the exhaust bracket towards the front of the car. Remove the two torx for the #6 coil pack, closest to the front, pass side. unclip the plug to the coil pack, pull the coil pack, remove the spark plug. pop that camera in there. if the piston is at TDC, put the plug back in crack it and shut it down and hope that the piston is now near BTC. Try again until you can see what you need to see.

Again I am not convinced it is cylinder 6 though, it seems very much like cylinder 2.

No worries, I knew this type of a thing was a possibility when I decided to own a car like this. My goal is to gather info and figure my path forward. While selling it broken isn’t something I really want to do, it has to be a consideration with the way this market is. If I fix it I plan to “do it right” and probably keep the car forever, which is what I need to figure out if I want to do. I really wanted a GT3 at some point, but this project would probably turn into my GT3. I just need to be realistic of if I won’t get down the road and itch for something different.
