08, 997 S, 54 k miles , drive it maybe 4K a year, due for annual service, drop it of 10 days ago, needed just an oil change.
get a call a week ago, “Did you know you had a shock that had leaked out in the front?” No....I had just done a fairly brisk 150 miles loop thru the
foothills and the car was perfect. Whatever....what do we do? Well they need to be replaced in pairs....ok. Fine. I was headed out of town and
well whatever. Finally get a call today that it was done, Sorry for the delay, parts were hard to come by etc......pick it up and it’s $3300 plus.....
i look at him....and he says I got you the best deal I could. Disclosure....I wrench on some things but not P cars and before everyone says
it was an easy DIY based upon the labor hours didn’t seem to be. So, just wondering if that was in line. My last 997 never needed shocks and I sold
it at 85k miles......
Thanks as always...

What is the parts and labor distribution on that? The genuine part is going to be a solid portion of that I'm guessing? An independent probably would have used OEM parts (they make the Porsche part, but just don't have the Porsche logo), which would have saved you something. But I'm also sure their labor rate is high too.

You didn't ask what the cost would be to replace the 2 shocks and oil change at a Porsche dealership before giving the ok to do the work. You said it was just taken for a nice ride and everything was fine. You should find an independent that could have done that work. It's pretty basic work for any Porsche independent.
Not for nothing... that is due diligence 101 to ask those questions.

If you have PASM, each front shock will cost about $800 each. Add in the usual associated parts (like strut mounts, etc), you end up paying another $150-200 for miscellaneous parts for each side. Labor I am guessing is probably 6+ hours.
The rears are a little cheaper ($600+ each). At most you could have save a few hundred going to an indy shop, but the parts are really expensive, and even if you go non-OEM, you don't save that much. My rears went 3-4 years ago. PASM is expensive.

Ouch!
Glad I can do this type of stuff myself. I honestly couldn't own these cars (or as many of them) if I had to have them dealer serviced.

What brand of shocks were installed, and what was the itemized price for them, excluding labor?

My indy quoted me $2400 total (parts and install) to replace the front shocks with Porsche parts ($800 per). I ended up getting all four corners replaced with Bilstein B8s and Eibach springs for $3000 installed. Porsche front shocks are basically Bilstein B4s, which are significantly cheaper than the Porsche versions. The extra $600 was worth it to me to get all four corners, upgraded suspenders and lower springs.

Thanks for the responses, yes they were OEM so it would appear that all was in line ....which if I didn’t make clear in my original
post was all I was asking. I wasn’t nutted up about it, just seemed a stretch from a basic oil change to $3300. Is all.
As to Dartmouth......Thanks for your deep and well thought out response. I’m a high school dropout so I appreciate your
guidance in this matter, and going forward I’ll certainly treasure it.
