Red face Transmission Failure

I was driving my 2007 4S with 43K miles and there was a loud bang from the rear of the car. I took the car to the dealer and they said there was an internal transmission failure and said the don't work on transmissions and offered to replace it for $25K. Has anyone experienced this issue? I have reached out to my local Porsche mechanic and he is getting back to me with a quote to rebuild it.

see if there is a used one available FS from a REPUTABLE seller.

25k for a tiptronic transmission is absurd.

What type of transmission ? Auto or manual? Is the car drivable and noise still occurs ? Is it possible that it's center diff? Flywheel or clutch failure?

Used auto trannies or manual trannies are $2500-5000. Budget a new clutch ./ flywheel, fluids, RMS and etc.

These guys have some of either of above in used tranny :

New manual trannies, LSD version seems like the best bet:

a transmission swap is pretty straight forward on these cars, basically any wrench could do it.

Default Transmission Failure

Thank you everyone for your responses. I am going to send the car to a transmission specialist and look into the issue. Definitely don't need a new transmission.

It's funny that a transmission with limited slip diff is cheaper than one without - or am I missing something here?

The transmission is a Tiptronic. When I put the car in gear and step on the gas the engine revs but the car does not move.

I agree - also unethical, borderline criminal.

It is a mercedes 722.6 transmission, and is very common. It's used in a ton of cars. You need to take it to a mercedes specialist who can rebuild it or just swap in a used unit.

Agreed with everyone to get a nice used unit. Any good independent porsche mechanic can help with this. Even a regular mechanic can do this with little issue afaik.

From my quick research this is the transmission part number
722.270.240.0

the 722.270.230 is for the 05 so skip that.

Here's a link to the full part number catalog as you build knowledge in the area: https://www.porsche.com/all/media/pd...97_KATALOG.pdf

Look on page 81 of the pdf

$25K for a used Tiptronic? I say used or refurbished since I don't think they make them anymore, at least not for 911's. You can buy a new PDK for less than that.. Are you sure that's not a typo and you meant to say $2,500? If $25,000 is the actual quote you got from your dealer for a replacement TIP I personally would never set foot there again. Here's a used one on Ebay for $2,199. It's got over 100K miles on it but the TIP's rarely fail so I wouldn't be concerned: https://www.ebay.com/itm/2006-06-07-...0AAOSwVztfpd5n

Another here with just 62K miles on it for $2,299.99: https://www.ebay.com/itm/2008-06-07-....c100005.m1851

I'd be curious to see the $25,000 replacement offer in writing from your dealer. It would take some nerve to put that together.

Not only would I never step foot in there again, but I'd call PCNA and let them know there's some foul play involved with quoting a customer. A fair rate for a fair job and ripping off an existing customer 10x over is a different story.
