I was driving my 2007 4S with 43K miles and there was a loud bang from the rear of the car. I took the car to the dealer and they said there was an internal transmission failure and said the don't work on transmissions and offered to replace it for $25K. Has anyone experienced this issue? I have reached out to my local Porsche mechanic and he is getting back to me with a quote to rebuild it.

What type of transmission ? Auto or manual? Is the car drivable and noise still occurs ? Is it possible that it's center diff? Flywheel or clutch failure?

Used auto trannies or manual trannies are $2500-5000. Budget a new clutch ./ flywheel, fluids, RMS and etc.

a transmission swap is pretty straight forward on these cars, basically any wrench could do it.

Thank you everyone for your responses. I am going to send the car to a transmission specialist and look into the issue. Definitely don't need a new transmission.

It's funny that a transmission with limited slip diff is cheaper than one without - or am I missing something here?

The transmission is a Tiptronic. When I put the car in gear and step on the gas the engine revs but the car does not move.

probably can get a used tiptronic trans for under $2k on eBay and probably another $2k or so installed

It is a mercedes 722.6 transmission, and is very common. It's used in a ton of cars. You need to take it to a mercedes specialist who can rebuild it or just swap in a used unit.

Agreed with everyone to get a nice used unit. Any good independent porsche mechanic can help with this. Even a regular mechanic can do this with little issue afaik.

$25K for a used Tiptronic? I say used or refurbished since I don't think they make them anymore, at least not for 911's. You can buy a new PDK for less than that.. Are you sure that's not a typo and you meant to say $2,500? If $25,000 is the actual quote you got from your dealer for a replacement TIP I personally would never set foot there again. I'd be curious to see the $25,000 replacement offer in writing from your dealer. It would take some nerve to put that together.

Not only would I never step foot in there again, but I'd call PCNA and let them know there's some foul play involved with quoting a customer. A fair rate for a fair job and ripping off an existing customer 10x over is a different story.
