Another oil analysis

"Good wear metal results. Zinc and Phosp looks good. But, terrible viscosities for <2,400 miles. That oil is shearing down just like the crappy Mobil 0W40 does. That oil would NEVER last 10K miles, let alone 5K."
Any thoughts on why? This is my first analysis but Motul usually fares pretty well on viscosity I think. Would the Ceratec contribute to that?

Or DI40 if 997.2. Then again, Mobil One 0-40 has worked fine for me for the last 100K miles under my stewardship. But I don't want to make this am oil war.
Unfortunately I'm not seeing a reference to the analysis data so I'm a bit blind here. But it seems something more is going on. What kind of driving have you been doing? Track? Short trips? Climate considerations. Age? And so forth.
Again, I'm blind here. Sorry if you posted information I'm not seeing. The Android interface is lacking.

PS: I also have a problem that the posts get cut off on my phone and the names get interchanged so generally I'm not sure who is saying what!!! So sorry if I've add any additional confusion.

Apparently Mobil must make some oil formulations that are not sold in quart containers. I also drive a SL500 Benz that was serviced exclusively at MB dealer from new with Mobil 1 5-40 from a bulk container, so I suspect not all Mobil 1 5-40 is the diesel formulation we see at Walmart.

Not sure what oil this is or how long it was run, but the Zinc, Phosphorous, and Moly are all a little lower than ideal, which is probably why the Iron & Copper (Bearings) and Aluminum (bores) are 2-3 points higher than what I normally see on my wife's car at 107k miles. Now if the oil was run 7,500-8,500 miles or so, then these numbers are inline. If it was 3,000-5,000 there are better choices out there. That being said, this is also the first report and you can't really see trends until you have a a few (3-4) using the same oil and change interval to really see how it's performing.

Thanks. I just bought the car in July...records show an oil change about a year ago...I'll check the mileage when I get home (not over 4k, I believe)...it was Mobil 1 I'm almost positive. I changed the oil to Motul about 2100 miles ago.

Good move. Change it again and submit another sample between 4,000-5,000 miles and let's take another look.

Speaking of Motul 8100 5-40 xcess, I think I am going to change due to my slightly high iron and copper levels and non existent Molybdenum. Runs perfect and does not burn (hardly) any oil in 4200 miles intervals. Oh I did add Defender fuel injector cleaner/booster in the last tank of gas before the oil change. See attached -any input / thoughts? Thanks.

Heres my second report. 3440 miles on the oil. Changed from motul that the prior owner put in and changed it for Rotella T6. I know there’s a love hate relationship with T6 around here but it seems to still be doing well for my 90k mile .1c2s. Looking forward to the second report using this oil later this year.

Is it not possible that the low viscosity on the 2 DFI engines below is due to fuel dilution more so than shearing? I know the Blackstone report says no fuel dilution but it seems to be fairly well known that their fuel dilution "measurement" is pretty meaningless and inaccurate. The Blackstone estimation of fuel dilution is based on the Flash Point only, and a pretty arbitrary method of determining how much it has changed. Blackstone is not an accredited lab, following industry standards like the companies that serve heavy industry. These other companies actually measure fuel dilution more directly via Gas Chromatography, using an ASTM standard method. I have recently personally confirmed that the Blackstone fuel dilution "measurement" can't be relied on. A couple of oil changes ago I collected 4 samples and sent them to 4 different labs. I knew I had fuel dilution, and Polaris/Horizon/Oil Analyzers/Amsoil has consistently said that I had something over 2% fuel dilution after 5,000 to 6,000km between changes. Blackstone said I had none, though they measured the same low viscosity as all the other labs, and commented on it, but still claimed I did not have fuel dilution when I most definitely did. So, it is possible that the sample submitted by KLS has unreported fuel dilution. The other big lab, besides Polaris, is ALS. Both have multiple locations in North America. There is also WearCheck which has an International presence. You can access Polaris via Amsoil or Cummins or several others who resell their services. I am currently using the WearCheck location in Burlington, Ontario, Canada and have compared them on multiple changes with Polaris and they give the same numbers across the board including fuel dilution. I like WearCheck because I can drop off my sample on the way to work and get my results by the next day at the latest.
