The first 911 I ever drove was a 993 - I immediately lost all interest.

Yeah, PAG long broadened its market by moving away from the original 911 soul to ever more refined, more isolated cars to today's 992 limo. Doing that many who could not drive a 911 now drive a car that distantly looks like a 911 (sort of).

And yet ATSR recently purchased that very same 993 he references above after selling his very well done white 2010(?) C2. I was surprised he gave that car up for the 993. Hows that working out for ya AT?

This reminds me of the manual vs pdk conversation. Sometimes newer feels better than classic. I drove a manual for 6 years straight. I don’t miss it all. Especially in the mountains. Pulling those paddles up/down and the instant response is SO fun to me. Very few people agree with me. But I love the PDK.

Going by the sales numbers, more people agree than disagree with you. Last I saw, PDK 911's outsold manuals 80% to 20%. This forum as good as it is just isn't a good proxy for PDK vs.manual. Very strong preference for manuals among those who post here. Could approach the reverse statistics of what's actually selling.

That would probably be because only a small percentage are real fanatics that love driving a stick to feel connected to their machine and love the car for what it is, as opposed to the majority of buyers being the wealthy population buying Porsches to make a statement because it is a Porsche and aren't even interested in how it drives. You could put a Porsche badge on a Hyundai and they'd buy it because of the badge on the hood.

That said, I would have preferred automatic so my wife could drive it from time to time😁 but the Tiptronic was so bad, I just couldn't do it.

Yeah, that's why I usually avoid Palomar early in the morning. When I used to ride my moto, it was dawn patrol and the only other guys on the mountain where cyclists.

I like Mesa Grande but have you driven on Engineers Road. That's a fun road!

sure but that’s because of other reasons, too. Such as... a lot of people can’t drive a stick. Or can’t drive one well. Or get the car just for c and c. Or prefer manual but buy PDK because it’s all their dealer has. Etc etc. personally I think it’s all great because it’s helped me retain much better value on all of my 911 and GT3 6MTs.

As as for the vintage air cooled cars, some guys love them... but I much prefer 997s.

you can't drive any late model 911 and then get into a 993 - it simply dosen't compare, I know the feeling - many, many years ago, I owned a 993S - loved it to death, but years after I was used to a late model 911, I felt as you do, not sure I would compare it to a truck, but the ride is not the same.

I like my 993 a lot but it is afterall a 22 year old car...and for 22 years old it's terrific...yet I like my 964 even better.
All the gens are very different as we all know...all great in their own way...but to me the best of all is the 997 and it seems people are starting to agree finally.

disagree.

performance..yeah of course it won't be the same, although my 3tt would keep up with many a modern car.

How it feels...different and more enjoyable to me.

When I owned my 964 I used a diesel diaper between the engine tray and engine to soak up the pools of oil. IMO 964 similar to 911sc but not as refined as 993.
993 was a nice car but I sort of fell in love with the 997 design and better driveability.

Boy! This forum is telling about what people driving '911s' expect. But no, not even an original 901 drives like a truck. It drives like a 911.

When I was shopping for my first 911 in 2012 where I ended up buying my RUF 997, I actually looked at and drove a 95 964 3.6 Turbo. The car was pretty much what I was expecting - classic Porsche, pretty fast, very cool, but not really what I was looking for at the time. Should have bought it though as I could have had it for $50k and then sold it a couple years later for 3x that, but then I wouldn't have the 997, which is my favorite of my 5 P-cars. Someday I will add an air cooled 911 to the stable - likely a 993 Turbo or 993 based RUF R-Turbo or maybe an 89 speedster, but until I have more money and more space, I'm very happy I ended up with my 997, so much so that that next year I bought my wife one too.
