Bite it man - I have to drive several hundred miles just to find scenery half that nice. You California guys **** me off - you know we have to come out there on our vacations and rent Mustang convertibles at SFO for gawds sake.

How's that 91 octane for $4.34 a gallon?????

That’s not fair.

My GMC Denali pickup rides much better than a 993. And it doesn’t smell like fuel and oil inside.

Haha thats about right!

I had one for about 5 years. Beside all the rhetoric about analog, raw, blah blah blah, the 997 is a much better ride. I enjoyed the 993 for sure but its no comparison

I hope this doesn't start a 993 and 997 turf war like West Side Story or something worse.....

You weren't blown away by how *raw* and *visceral* it was??

I can hardly wait for my 991 to be raw and visceral. Right now, it’s fat and bloated. When the 992 launches this fall, it will be fat and bloated and my my 991 will become raw and visceral, the last real 911, etc.

I drove one for the first time a few years back too. Felt like a 20 year old car because it was a 20 year old car at the time...in slight contrast, a totally original 91 NSX I drove for a bit felt almost like a tuned car, on lowered suspension. However, the non assisted steering was a pain.

bouncier, smaller, smells different, more rattles, sounds different. It wreaks of history. I get it...but get the 997 more.

If I did do a air cooled, I would likely lean towards 964...or maybe even an sc.

I'll assume there's some hyperbole here. I took my friend's 993 Targa down Mulholland and surrounding canyons a couple years ago. It drove like a 20 y/o sportscar but hardly a truck. I was most impressed with the steering and transmission. Not a ton of power and it needed a more aggressive alignment but the latter was likely just my taste. I had a blast. Having driven corvettes and M cars from from the 90s i thought it was a much better experience. Haven't driven an NSX but I could see the above comparisons being true.

Fair enough, good feedback all around. Never drove a 993. I've had some episodes of "don't meet your heroes" recently. Drove 4 e46 M3 in the last week and the driving experience of them hasn't aged well at all, even on one which had had all of its suspension gone through and replaced. Same with my first E30 which I drove last week.

So which 15+ year old cars don't drive like old cars? I've had a couple 12 year old miata that were sprightly and responsive, didn't feel their age.

993's can feel very different based on their suspension, engine tuning and exhaust... and to a lesser extent their gearshift

in stock form 993s and 964s are meh -- floaty, not much throttle response, way too quiet. the 993 especially has a smoothness to it that is quite un-porsche...

but when they are done right... reflash/wong chip, intake/fister cans, ssk/goldenrod, pss9 then are a lot of fun... are they a modern car? no...that is not the point... but they do have a terrific appeal... much of which, like many later na 911's, is when the car is hustling around curves and engine revving up high, small body shell snug around you windshield up close, steering wheel wriggling

a lot of this old car charm is perceived as a matter of taste and of expectations... there is definitely air cooled magic here, but may be below the surface... trust me...

Won't speak to the experience. Looks like a great day up in Chilleno Valley.

How's your car running now?
