Default 997 Leak

Hi All,

Had this question in the wrong area. Putting it in the right place now hopefully.

Noticed a leak on my 997 porker and was wondering what it could be. Had a look at all the common issues IMS/RMS and doesn't seem this is the culprit because:

1) The leak seems like a coolant/water leak. The liquid is clear.
2) The location seems different to those issues.

Thought it might just be the air/con evaporator, but correct me if I'm wrong this would be at the front of the car?

Attached is the location where the leak is.

Any help with this will be appreciated.

Cheers,

Mobs

Not sure about the location but clear/yellow liquid is brake fluid

see this post for fluid color

Looks like the axle shaft is wet, maybe an axle seal. Not sure what color trans fluid is.

Perhaps coolant expansion tank. It tends to crack on the bottom and leak down near the left side of the engine. Check your expansion tank coolant level. Is it low? You can top it off with distilled water and see if it continues to drop.

lol! I was thinking that too. I wouldn't touch it though until it springs an exhaust leak. The moment you put a wrench on it it will need to be replaced.

The nut and washer at the top of the photo (bottom of the motor mount) also look very wet so it's something coming from above and dripping down. I think the hydraulic motor mounts are solid rubber, but if their fluid filled rubber (I've never cut one open), could be a blown motor mount.

if not, that motor mount is directly below the brake fluid reservoir so that could be overfilled and dripping, cracked and dripping, or leaking from a fitting. If it's not that, it's probably coolant. Should be easy to discern which between those two fluids, with coolant being pink and smelling like glycol and brake fluid being clearer and more oily. Brake fluid would tend to attract more dirt looking greasy like what's in the pic, so that's my guess.

So I had a look around the car.

1) The brake fluid is at the max reading on the reservoir tank, so probably can rule this out?
2) I checked the coolant level and it is at the max reading too. I have evans water less coolant in the tank and I think that is a pinkish color as well, so the color doesn't match.

Car is running fine and no errors have come up for anything low. Really scratching my head over this. Will get the car in to the stealers next week and see what they recommend and update here.

The headers are pretty bad now. Had the mufflers changed, but I think the headers need replacing at some point, no leaks yet, so when the do probably will get those changed.

Thanks for the help, and hopefully this is an easy fix....

if you cant look at the fluid that is dripping, and figure out what it is, you are wasting your time

Looks like engine mount leaking - they are fluid filled!

Good excuse to fit a semi solid set - not to difficult a job if your handy!

Wow did not know the mounts are filled with fluid, German over engineering! Might be a bit of a stretch to DIY this for me though means getting the engine out

I have booked the car in this week for Porsche to have a look. Since all the fluid levels seem to be holding, I'm not to worried to be honest.

Will reply with what is the outcome here for any other punters

Motor mounts are actually not that big a job. You loosen but don't fully remove the bottom nut, then do each side one at a time, while using a jack to support and control the side you're working on. The motor does not need to come out.

There's an overflow hose on the coolant expansion tank. Pour some water around the tank cap (with the cap on tight) and watch where that water drains. My coolant cap wasn't tight enough and I found a small puddle of coolant in that area. I was going to replace the tank but after seeing it was new, I did the above, and decided to just replace the coolant cap. That fixed my problem.

Hi All,

Quick update. The leaking was coming from the AC condenser. The actual water was dripping a lot more at the mid point of the car, don't know how it got to the back.

Think that solved it, hopefully. Thanks for all the suggestions.
