That is a pretty low price for only 28k miles. Check for bore scoring. An 09 with higher miles is a better way to go, but check for bore scoring on anything earlier than an 09.

It is a friends car (which makes me even more nervous). I sounds good, and there is no signs of scoring. Is this something that can be prevented? the car is an automatic, can there be a new chip installed that protects the engine? or some sensor, a better lubricant?

Here's your checklist:
This is what I'm doing in both my 2005 997.1 3.8s and haven't had any issues - wife's DD is at 95,000 miles and my supercharged one is at about 55,000 miles.
Enjoy !
- LN Engineering Spin on Oil Filter Adapter with K&N HP-1007 or M1-107 Filter - this prevents any debris from getting by the fiilter bypass valve in the OEM filter setup as the spring fatigues over time
- FilterMag Oil Filter Magnet - traps any microscopic ferrous debris against the side of the filter
- LN Engineering Magnetic Oil Filter Drain Plug - extra insurance. Don't over-tighten; just 19 ft. lbs.
- Driven DT40 5W-40 Motor Oil - has the proper levels of Zinc & Phosphorous to protect the valve train and is good up to 300 degrees F
- Change Oil every 4,000-5,000 miles based on results from Used Oil Analysis reports (send to Blackstone, LN, or others - make sure report includes the TAN & TBN analysis so you can see how much of the anti-wear additive package remains at the time the sample was taken)
- Install 160 degree Low-Temp Thermostat - allows for a more gradual warm-up of the motor by opening sooner. This is the one that will help prevent bore scoring.
- Don't start the car and let it warm up at idle - the enriched fuel trim that occurs with the initial higher RPM idle can wash lubrication from the cylinder walls - drive away so that this extra fuel is being used for propulsion. Do not exceed 3,000 RPM until the oil temp is up near 200 degress F on the left gauge.
- Keep oil level at the full arrow or one line down from the full arrow - never above it where the bar-graph is completely full - this can damage your AOS.
