Did you happen to purchase this car out of Bedford NY area? Looks very familiar. Was about to pull the trigger on it a couple of years ago but it sold.

Best of luck with the sale.

You sure those gauges aren't aluminum look, Rick? You have option code X71 on your frunk sticker.

You're probably right! They totally do look white when seen in person though.

Well, although minor, it could be an important difference to some people. I could be wrong, but I do not believe white gauge faces were a factory option - I don't see a Porsche option code for white gauge faces in the list of all available option codes for the 996tt. When you read about them in the forums, they are always aftermarket modifications. So, in the world of the Porsche purist (who generally will pay top dollar, but only for non-modded cars), white gauge faces may be considered a boy racer mod and could hurt your bidding, whereas the factory aluminum look gauges would be a plus. Note that the first guy ("AlfaHolic") who mentioned "white gauges" clearly did not like them.

I know that Porsche offered colored gauge faces, but it was to match the exterior color of the car.

We're all pulling for your car to get top dollar. You certainly picked the right time of the year to sell and your auction is off to a great start.

I agree, it is important to let it be known they are OEM aluminum gauges.

Have to laugh at snowflakes who would turn down a unicorn because of gauge face color. It's $300-600 to change.

I actually like them a lot! If I were speccing a new Porsche I would add them as an option.

The only info I've been able to find about the "aluminum look" points to the rim of the gauge being aluminum. Does anyone have more insight into whether the aluminum look might have come with white faces from the factory?

If not, in the interest of full disclosure I'll caveat it in the comments.

Edit: this guy says the alums do look white, so we might have solved it

Re-edit: and this guy, too:

Dial faces, not rims. And silver(ish), not white.

The option descriptions in the order guides specifies this, and it matches what I've seen on every car optioned with X71 or Y29.

Options:
  • X71 = 'Aluminum look' colored Instrument Dials.
  • C45 = Instrument dials painted in Speed Yellow, Guards Red, Carrara White or Jazz Blue.
  • X45 = Instrument Dials Painted in interior color.
  • Y29 (which your car has) includes X71 (and X70 stainless door sills and X50 stainless exhaust).
Dials are alum look, not white, unless replaced at some point.

I'm pretty sure the aluminum 'rims' on the dials you see on some cars (and the threads you linked to) are aftermarket. Inexpensive ebay items that were not a factory option...

Thanks a lot - there seems to be good evidence that alum look could pass for white to an untrained eye. I'll take some close-ups and post them in the auction over the weekend.

I found and installed an instrument cluster with aluma-look faces and silver gauge rims that appeared to be factory pieces. This was on a prior 996tt. I had tried the aftermarket trims on a previous cluster and they were crude looking.

I have aluminum gauge faces on my car, they look white. I like them and will get them on my next Porsche.
