I think BaT simply set the reserve lower than what the seller agreed to.

Hi All- Despite the reserve not being met at close, an issue with the system led to the highest bid being inadvertently accepted. And even though it was beyond our control, we decided to honor that bid, until the buyer informed us they couldn’t complete the sale. We worked with BAT and all of us decided to walk away from the transaction and relist the auction. To be clear, this had nothing to do with the car itself and more with the transaction.
