And the stupidity of over-paying for a car due to original options like X50, particularly when it looks like some other stuff has been swapped. Does an owner that takes this poor care of his interior keep the mechanicals perfectly sorted? I'd bet not.

They all require care. I have two cars with brown interiors. But after I went through this exercise (link) in my SC, I’m careful with my brown, black, and alcantara interiors.

Basically I treat the leather twice a year, use a towel on the bottoms, never slide across bolsters but instead lift myself up and over them. Sports seats are the most at risk and I have 5 cars with elevated bolsters. It requires some effort but eliminates most visible wear. I even put some quick release plastic film over the wear surfaces near the shifters. Once you’ve ever tried to source seats in a matching color, you understand. This owner took no precautions and probably wore jeans most of the time.

The CarFax on this thing is damn near perfect. Timely oil changes, dampers and tires replaced and several other small things fixed.

For me, someone who buys, and advises many others, on buying used cars timely oil changes are the most important and critical maintenance factor of a vehicle. The seats, gear shift and console are non-issue to me, easily corrected. Would I use them as a negotiating tactic, absolutely. But other than that it's meaningless.

Looks like the last time it was at a Porsche dealer was 2010? Nor does it look like it ever visited a indy Porsche specialist.
Couple that with all the existing cosmetic issues, weird questions about why does it not have Turbo headlights, what happened to the original door sills, and my guess is that this car is anything *but* well sorted.
When I see painfully obvious stuff 'non-issues' that have been neglected, I wonder what else that I can't see is equally jacked up.

Well I'm not advocating *skipping* frequent oil changes, but keeping a 996 Turbo well sorted involves so much more than dropping it off once a year and having them change the oil and maybe tires... And it looks like much of the time it wasn't even a Porsche dealer.

This question is for my information only: do folks here consider CarFax a documentation of service history? I’m curious, as I always assumed absolutely not but if buyers today are conditioned to accept CarFax in lieu of full service records then obviously I need to at least somewhat align my expectations with the market
I can’t tell you how many 911’s are now advertised with “Full service history on CarFax” and these cars actually sell!
Much like how used car dealers now get away with selling 1-key auction cars: “I don’t have any EXTRA keys with this car”

Completely disagree, this car was very well-maintained mechanically. It appears to me the owner had a bit of a fat a$$, wore rings, heavy boots (maybe a rock star?) and probably a dog that he took for rides and thus the interior is a bit tattered. That stuff is purely cosmetic and easily repaired.

The problem I see with the entire market right now is people seem to be doing things solely to help when they’re ready to sell. I started my computerized maintenance records in 1984 and it had nothing to do with satisfying some future buyer. It was then, and is now for my own knowledge.
I wish those that rely on Carfax all the luck in the world. These buyers today are a different breed. There is a 993 for sale right now where one of the commenter’s requests is basically for the seller to tell him how many stone chips are on his hood; 1-10, 10-25, etc. There are not enough ways for me to tell him to go to he.l.

I don’t consider Carfax a complete source of maintenance history for a multitude of reasons. Carfax didn’t exist when I bought my 911 SC so good luck with CF on older cars. Secondly this is a maintenance forum which leads one to think many owners here do some or all their maintenance work. DIY repairs won’t be there.

Are we looking at the same car??? There is not a single service record between 2010 and 2021 in the carfax or the BaT listing. Is this a car you personally know?
And do you have any theories on what happened to the original headlights, X70 sill guards, X54 exhaust tips, etc? A dog, big rings, and a fat-*** don't exactly explain those discrepancies away...

Even if there is a 100% Carfax documentation of every single time the car was serviced, IMO it is still worthless because Carfax does not document the tech's recommendations and whether or not they were accepted
"Open checkbook" maintenance is the bipolar opposite of "deferred maintenance", and Carfax cannot document one iota of this dichotomy in the car's service history: which is crucial; especially on a 996
