What did you do to your 996TT today?

A lot of mechanics charge by the "book", whatever time the repair manual says it takes to do the job is what they charge even if they can do it in half the time.
I know a service manager at a large dealership who created a time chart of his mechanics skills. He knew witch ones could do certain jobs faster than others and when a particular job came in he would assign a faster mechanic to it but he still charged the "book" time no matter what but by going with the faster guy he was often able to squeeze in a few more repairs per operating day. The dealership gives him a nice bonus every year for coming up with the system and the mechanics make more money because they are paid by the job not just an hourly wage.

My thought is: if your going to charge 8 hours of labor and list it as 8 hours of labor when in reality the actual work is less than 8…...that's simply wrong no matter how many dealers/shops do it. What I would be satisfied with and what I feel is more representative, is to simply state what the job will cost. The hours have nothing to do with the actual work being done so why use that to track the cost?
Okay, so this is a what did I do with my 996TT today thread so to include that: I parked my car in the garage and am waiting for EVOMS intercooler hoses to come.

It's a rip off system. They shouldn't even have hourly rates if everything is booked and not even close to the real time it takes. I noticed that before indy's were doing it in less hours then the what the dealers book said but now that they stole a lot of business have went and started charging the same hours as the dealer.
My feeling has been if I didn't like the price a shop quoted me I would try and do the job myself. I am successful at these repairs most of the time but there are occasions that the job is just to much for me to handle so I pay to have it done. I figure then it is worth paying the "book" rate.

If a dealer uses a system of fixed hours for each repair and they charge $100/hr, then a 4 hour job is going to cost you $400. If an independent repair shop uses the same fixed hour/repair system that the dealer uses but charges $20/hour less than the dealer, the job will cost you $320. If the $400 charged by the dealer is too rich for your blood then take the car to the independent. If the $320 charged by the independent is too rich for your blood then try to find someone cheaper. If you can't find anyone cheaper, try to do the repair yourself, or sell the car.

Hood wrap looks great! I'm thinking on doing this for a change of pace. Maybe keep it a year or so and then remove.
