Castrol Syntec 5w-50. Both in 03 996 Turbo and 02 Boxster.

Did use Mobil 1 0w-40 in both engines them switched to Mobil 1 5w-50 (not typo for 15w-50 either) for the Turbo but recently switched to Castrol cause I can find this on local autoparts store shelf. Mobil 1 5w-50 I had to order.

For the Boxster I've used Mobil 1 15w-50, Mobile 1 0w-40 and most recently Mobil 1 10w-40 high mileage oil but switched to Castrol 5w-50 since I only have to stock one oil for both cars.

And while I know Mobil 1 0w-40 factory fill I do not believe the Mobil 1 0w-40 of late is as good as the Mobil 1 0w-40 of old.

Regardless of the oil I have used, I always change it and filter at 5K mile intervals. 231K miles on Boxster's original engine. I've added nearly 25K miles to the Turbo in a year (bought it a year ago last June with 9500 miles and I changed the oil at 10K miles and then every 5K miles since then.

In fact it is in the shop today for some other stuff and even though the oil is not quite to 5K miles going to have the oil/filter changed. Along with 6-speed manual transmission fluid and rear differential fluid.

Sincerely,

Macster.

Mobil 1 0W-40 exclusively, chnaged every 5000 miles religiously and the car has 265,000+ miles on the original engine and turbos.....T2 knocks on wood!! It's a 2003 X50.

"chnaged every 5000 miles religiously"

That is I believe the key. Frequent oil changes.

I ran Mobil 1 0w-40 in my 02 Boxster for probably most of its (currently) 231K miles and changed the oil or had it changed -- sometimes even while traveling -- every 5K miles without fail. (My Turbo gets the same 5K oil/filter change schedule, though this last change had the oil/filter changed at less than 5K miles.)

For those that can't or won't change the oil that frequently or for thos that subject their car to harsher than average usage even 5K might not be often enough and extra engine protection margin might be obtained by switching to a better oil.

Another factor is that in your car's case and in my car's case they both received alot of use, covered a lot of miles per year. This means they didn't rack up all those miles making short trips. This kind of usage is the easiest on the engine and its oil. A car that covers fewer miles per year, accumulates these fewer miles from short trips, this is harsh usage (one form of it). And a car engine subjected to this kind of usage could benefit from either more frequent oil/filter services, every 4K even every 3K miles, and (or) from running a better quality engine oil.

Sincerely,

Macster.

I change my oil every other track weekend, and I have been running Shell T6 Synthetic. However, I want to move to a 5W50 if I can find it... Might have to go to the castrol route...

I run 0W-40 and change 3 times a year if doing any track events (spring, summer, fall) and 1-2 times a year if not. Probably overkill but nobody can claim I wasn't diligent about frequent oil changes

Dell forewarned is forearmed... These motors require more dligent attention due to the heat imposed on the oil by the turbos. I'd recommend doing a couple of blackstone labs tests... I did, and the numbers after two weekends were in the toilet. 0W40 isn't up to the task of tracking, and beware the changes in the "mix" that no longer make 0W40 suitable... Check a thread over on turboflatsix.com for a little education on oil and these motors...

I have considered moving to 5W-50 for the next oil change but I will not read a thread that "discusses" what oil should be used.

Nope, this is not a thread about that... it's actually a very technical thread and an education on molecular properties and such... Stuff that's way over my head and sold me on much more frequent oil changes...

Doug H. starts chiming in on page 4 and that's where it gets educational.

Alright, alright. I'll read the damn thread! I'll probably move to 5-50 anyway as I found a local distributor just a couple miles down the road.

Great thread....I agree with Mike on this. I use the M1 5w-50, but have not done analyses....my local 'track' guru/mechanic recommended the Castrol BMW M3 10w-60 stuff.

I used the same source as Dock. Nice stuff...and on sale right now.
