I'm kind of surprised at all this. I'm using the Mobil 1 recommended by the factory and changing it at the recommended interval -- 15,000 miles or 1 year, which ever comes first (I only drive my car about 6,500 miles a year, so that's the effective change interval).
WHY does my Dealership tell me it's a waste to change more often? My 1996 993 coupe needed topping off between changes on the same interval. My 2005 Turbo S doesn't. That one surprised me too.

With regard to oil change intervals, it's a matter of how hard you drive your car. I put about the same miles/year on my Turbo as you do, and I do not track it. I change the oil every 6-7k miles, or annually.

When you look at all the different oil test> 99% of the time they will tell you that in the end >>Changing your oil earlier is the "BEST" oil.. I wouldn't run these engines to 10K...

Kevin, What's a 996TT motor going for these days? I may consider buying a "spare"...

Nope, this is not a thread about that... it's actually a very technical thread and an education on molecular properties and such... Stuff that's way over my head and sold me on much more frequent oil changes...

Doug H. starts chiming in on page 4 and that's where it gets educational.

OK...let me get this right. Seems the best recommended oils are M1 5-50 / M1 TTD 5-40 and Delvac 1 5-40
I have access to all of these so it is no problem to purchase. What is the best oil ?

I don't think you can go wrong with any of those- BUT- I personally like the higher ZDDP content of the TDT and Delvac since the TDT quieted my IMS noise. I'll be using Delvac 1 5w40 for my next oil change since I read it's a better oil than TDT (as TDT isn't a generic Delvac 1 anymore).
