Default clutch engagement

hi guys....i've owned my car for about six months now and have put approx. 3k miles on it. i purchased the car with 36kmiles from the original owner. on two occasions already, including this morning and about 3 weeks ago, i noticed that i almost had to release the entire clutch pedal travel in order to engage first gear. besides those two instances the clutch engages approximately after releasing the pedal about 1/3 of full travel. i do not drive this car aggressively at all, but can not speak about the previous owner. i have not noticed any clutch slippage from any of the gears while driving. from my understanding the clutch is original...i had the clutch accumulator replaced about 1k miles ago.

any suggestions appreciated...thanks to all.

I think it is just the nature of the power assisted clutch. The engagement point varies making the clutch unpredictable and impossible to develop a regular feel.

Since the production run of the 996TT I have seen 6 cracked pressure plates (stock units).. The mileage varies between 20K and 42K The crack was with the actual diaphragm spring. This would give you the mixed pedal feel. In no way am I saying that your pressure plate is cracked, but it does give you another variable.

John.........really?
There are a number of things I don't like about the 'assist' Porsche dialed in to the Turbo clutch.......but, have to say, I had not noticed widely varying engagement points.

can anyone post a schematic of the pressure plate so that i can understand what portion of the clutch mechanism kevin is referring too?? i think i know what kevin is referring to but not 100%. isn't the pressure plate the portion that surrounds the clutch disk which in turn engages the flywheel..thanks for the help guys...

Gregg,

I wouldn't say widely varying, either. But varying. Every once in a while mine caught pretty high, too.

Manny,

I am a new member and have been experiencing the same kinds of issues with my "clutch" that you describe in several of your posts. What did it turn out to be? what was the fix?

Thanks MAnny,

I am heading that way. Did it change the "smoothness of the shifts or just the pedal feel?

hi steve...did not change the smoothnes of the shifts at all, but it certainaly changed the feel of the clutch. its much smoother and the point of engagement is more precise for sure. don't worry if you do not have warranty because it is not an expensive repair. a good indy should be able to change it without much difficulty. let me know of your outcome as well.

My car is in the shop right now getting a new slave/accumulator; mine was leaking fluid though. It should be about a $1K job.

She's back in the driveway about 7 hours and 1k worth of fun for my indy from a new slave and accumulator. Pedal is smooth as silk and actually a little to easy to push. The only strange thing is that high pitched wine from the pump that goes away by touching the pedal.... its still there!

They said to leave it alone, normal kind of thing/noise ??

Sounds like the power steering reservoir....if it is it should be fixed. There have been cars that burned to the ground for not taking care of this.

steve...wross is right. if your car is making a whining noise that disappears when depressing the clutch, then the power steering reservoir must be replaced. it can potentially be a dangerous condition since the fluid is highly flammable. look into it right a way. had mine replace about a year ago. from what i have read these things are typical with this type of car.
