So I'm ready to start modding (gee that only took about 3 weeks
) I was wondering what people have done to get to the 600 hp level, and , if you don't mind saying, what the cost was to get there. I'm in LA so any references for local shops would also be appreciated.
For the record this is a daily driver, so I am looking for reliablity/livability if that's possible. If not I'll stick to the 500 level (just chip and and exhaust?)

Where are you located.
this subject has been beat to death...do a search.
Edit, I see where you are, and I believe Speed Gallery is in your area,
good luck! 600 real horsepower is on the upper end of "daily drivabilty"
but certainly not out of reach in these cars, many have done alot more.
IMHO

To get 600 (at the fly wheel) you will need exhaust, intake, ECU programming and most important...turbos. Look around and as Woodster suggests do a search to find out who to talk to. Good luck and have fun!

Ok thank you for the info so far...it appears that up to stage 4 you pay about $3000 - 3500 per 50hp gained...my next question would be law of diminishing returns / dependability....
At what point was the HP gain most noticable (what level). Did you notice a big bump from 550 - 600? Also at what point (if any) does the Porsche bulletproofness start becoming more Ferrariesque (new word I know
) tempermental, thanks again for any info.

The point of diminishing returns is reached quickly. You will feel much more of a difference between the stock 996 and a Stage I upgrade (ECU only), then between a Stage I and a Stage II, etc. That being said, there is a significant difference between a Stage I upgrade and a Stage IV+ which supplies the 600 HP you are seeking -- you will feel the difference!
As someone else observed, attaining 600 HP requires, at a minimum, programming, exhaust, upgraded turbos, and perhaps also an intake (headers may also be a component of such packages).
600 HP does not present any reliability issues. The cars are far over-engineered and can handle this power level seemlessly.
You said you are in Los Angeles. I highly recommend Speed Gallery (818/766-2321). They have extensive experience building cars with the power you seek. Its important to develop a relationship with a local shop.

Not to change the subject, but what are you going to do with the car? You say it is "going to be a daily driver". And you want to know how much difference between stages........so I assume to test you "mods" you are taking the car to a dyno, drag strip, or race track? Cause trying to find out if 420hp vs 500hp vs 600hp on the street?? IMHO would not be practical.
I do one change at a time and then several DE's at Sebring race track. then I use my favorite test the seat of the pants dyno to see if I got my $ worth.
So unless you have a favorite proving ground in mind you are looking at a large money pit with relatively little return?! Just my 2 cents.

Tom, I disagree...but perhaps that is because I have a 45 minute commute on country roads and I get to exercise the car daily. My car is pretty much a daily driver and when I went to stage 2 from stock, the difference was distinctly discerned. Then, when I added the Evo V-Flo, once again I could clearly tell the difference in the way the car performed with regard to throttle response and power delivery. In no way do I consider the mods a money pit with little in return. In fact, just the opposite - I enjoy them every day and on weekends, too
.
Personally, I get a lot of "return on investment" just driving to work and feeling the G's, whether it's passing a car, taking off from a toll, putting it through the gears, etc. I don't need a track or dyno to realize and enjoy what I have created.
That said, my car is currently undergoing a stage 4 upgrade and should be ready tomorrow or Friday. Little return? Not for me, my return has been huge!

if he wants 600 real HP.. he needs either speed gallerys stage 5, IA/evoms gt640, or protomotives k24/18g hybrids... everything else is marginal. now I said 600 real HP... so these are my 3 choices..
I had 3 tuning kits already so Im sharing my experience.
a stage 4 with k24s or the k16s may not be enough... and for u to upgrade u will have to ditch the sates 4 turbos... be doen with it onece and for all. got with the on of the 3 mentioned packages.

Yep that's pretty much it...no rational reason whatsoever. This is my chance to make the crazy ride I always wanted....something about "600" just sounds right

My small brained observations at the track were:
I do not need more power! This might even be a detriment, depending on
the type of track you are on, i.e. #of high speed vs low speed corners, etc.
High horsepower is actually more fun on the street, IMHO
