Lightbulb FAQ: Fuel Pump Hose Failure Thread

I've compiled all I could find based on the postings here on RL so it would be in one place. Hats off to everyone in the threads I linked below who contributed.

The 996 GT3s, and possible the 997s? (?) have had a section of the fuel pump hosing fail, causing low revs and lack of performance.

Dealers have denied warranties (bad gas, race fuel), some have ‘goodwilled’ the repair, while others replace the entire setup with the latest and greatest, while still some others just replace the hose with a uprated section of fuel proof hose from Gates

Hose or Pinch Clamps To Use

(link), or of course scheck you local hardware store

Can be performed as a DIY (write up in the near future perhaps) as a preventive fix, or some have claimed to fix roadside with the pump still in the tank. I think I will tackle at home in the comfort and safety of my garage.

Per Lou (nineguru): Looks like removing the pump is not that hard just removing battery, batt. holder and undoing 3 lines and an electrical connection. Hardest thing looks like removing pump holder ring.

And just to say once more, a HUGE +1 for the RL 6-3 Forum. If it were not for the those posting great info,I would have missed an entire weekend at the track.

The more I looked into this issue the more it seemed appropriate to try to have all (most?) of the info in one place.

The Gates hosed really saved me. Thew dealership didn't have a 6-3 pump in stock, nor could one be procured within 24rs. The icing on the cake is that since the car is CPOd, a new pump is on the way.

I was kicking myself yesterday when we discovered it was the hose. I had discussed just a couple weeks ago with the dealership tech I normally request about doing this procedure as a preventative measure, but figured it wasn't a impending failure.

I guess I better stack up on necessary spares just in case.

Based on DIY - this is something I can do myself. I need GC for the hard stuff.

The link for the hose clamps seems to be broken.

Do you guys recommend pinch or normal style (screw?) hose clamps?

I'm going to tackle this in a couple of weeks as a preventative measure!

Lou was going to use some screw clamps. As long as they are rated for fuel, I don't think it matters. I was at the dealer, so they had the pinch clamps.

It would be helpful if we could note which fuel pump part numbers is/are failing. My 2004 (8/03), at 5720 miles, GT3 fuel pump was replaced by a dealer after warranty on 11/07 with 996 620 057 91. Are the continued problems of hose failure just with 996 620 057 90, or with all three fuel pump part numbers, including 996 620 057 92?

FYI, just as a backup I bought Gates 27093 from Club RSX, Colorado Springs with FedEx 2 day for $22.00.

    Default Fuel Hose Replacement

My mechanic Ken Conway just replaced the fuel hose with the Gates hose. He called to say the original was very soft and spongy. Based on the number of reports on this issue, it seems that it is a definite preventive maintenance item.

Off to the Glen for 5 days this Tuesday!

    JohnPG,
What was the part number on the feed pump? There are three pump numbers in question.
