I think for the stock size rims 305/245 is a good match. I'm running r6's but damn I lose air on my rears quite often on stock size rims. 12 inch rims would probably work better with r6 on 315. Deputydog since u got more rear brake bias maybe kuhmos ain't the right tire for u. With regards to going smaller on the rear for me a free set I'll let u know how they do : ). Mike

Did you ever find out what caused the flats? Was it something you picked up or did the tire fail.

Sucks I couldn't get in. Mark offered me a spot on Sunday, but I didn't email back quick enough. Not that I'm prepared anyway. Be safe. And don't push it too hard trying to beat my time

I think the Kumhos just have some quality control issues. All four of my tires were showing signs of failure. Aren't your factory rears 12" on the 996? They are on the 997. I run 315 R6's on 12" CCW's with no issues.

Hoosier and Kuhmo R compound-semi slicks. The dunlop's and michelin you mentioned by the sizes sound like real slicks.

aha! thanks John - sorry it took me a while to see that. The dealer I mentioned re the trial here is bringing in those Kuhmo as 280/245 beack/front width slicks.

Any one with much experience with these ie slicks? I thought the mention of 25+ Heat cycles was too good to be true - damn! Got all excited. Might have just been Megan's friend. Looks like she could do a few hc's.

But anyhoo ... looks like a set will cost $1000 here. Trial went well this weekend but early days expeically if there are quality control issues as mentioned above re splitting etc..

Also, reagrding the semis - how much road noise? do they whirr and drone under breaking?

^They(semis) don't make any noise with respect to braking. Only thing is due to grip the tires can rotate around the rim and car and steering wheel will vibrate like unbalanced tires. A few mentioned the aquanet hair spray applied to rim prior to install alleviates rotation. It's funny but I was surprised that Hoosier r6's do squeal on hard cornering v710's none. Regards. Mike

Hey Mike. My bridgestone semis make a helluva noise (in a good way ).

re the Kuhmo's I read what you said about slipping and Dell mentioned the hairspray. I just drove them and made them slip a bit, but after a while they seemed to find their grip on the wheel and then I balanced and ran them and they didn't slip from there - but that as I said was the slicks.

I noticed looking earlier today that I lost a couple weights on the rim so will rebal next week although I can't feel the difference w/o them. I don't think I'll get more than 6-8 HC's on the slicks but they're half the price of the dunlops and times seem the same for me and others who trialed ... which is nice.

here's what I mean - we marked tires with white market at the valve (see on the S & K letters in each pic) - look at it after 12 laps, but it stayed there ie it seems to slip at first and then find grip to wheel

Never had problem with tire balance. Maybe cause our track Sebring is so bumpy.

Hoosiers and Kumho's both rotate on the rim for me under braking. So much so that I've pretty much given up on balancing. One less thing to fly off... I had to have them balanced twice at Daytona just to get through the day. The vibration at 170+ was so bad I had a hard time seeing because of the vibration, which obviously is probably not so good for the car either. I'm considering taking them over to CCW in Daytona and having the inside bead blasted. Supposedly it will leak a little bit of air over a period, but for a track weekends it shouldn't matter if you lose a psi or 2.

I finally tried a set of Kumhos (305/30 rears on 12" rims and 245/35 on 9") and I quite liked them. I was at Chuckwalla and got down to 2:03 on a set of 50% Nitto NT01's. I bolted on the Kumhos and dropped 6 SECS down to a 1:57...the grip was incredible....like slicks. They now have 4 track days on them with 16+ HC's, they are harder and slower to get warm but wearing evenly and still performing well.

Hey Leigh-

So you are running "rounded" (245/35) up front, and "square" (305/30) in the rear. Kumho also makes a 245/40 in "square" up front...

Why did you choose the rounded over the square? Tire Rack has both available, so I am trying to decide...

I like Kuhmos alot. I'm running Hoosiers and I lose grip after 16hc's. Kuhmos was still grippy up to 38hc's til it corded at the 42 mark. I'm going back to kuhmos afterwards- have a fresh set of hoo hoos mounted to use up. Mike
