No idea on the power - the goal is 480hp and gobs of torque. It costs as much as you want it to cost. It's not a "kit" - IPB builds engines. You are just getting your feet wet at 25k, but this includes a complete engine rebuild, as you have to split the case to do a 4.0.

It's easy to drop 50k on an engine, as silly as it may sound. Then again, there are people in line to drop 200k on a GT3, so maybe not so silly after all.

Setting aside the diff/transaxle work, anything north of about $25K parts+labor for the engine (R+R) isn't rational. Also, you're starting from a 3.6 engine, which has some design limitations which were addressed/improved in the 3.8 of the 997 GT3. Even though I'm curious to see how this project turns out, I would be cautious to follow unless it could be done and running with a very lean budget, otherwise, it quickly becomes far more effective to start from the more expensive 997 platform. With the factory 4.0 parts soon to be a known quantity, I think the context of these sorts of displacement projects will be very different.

I hope you're keeping an eye on the ticket because it's very hard to "drop" $50K on an engine, short of buying a long motor as a spare part from Porsche. : )

To quell any thread-jacking to take this as an opportunity to describe how someone threw $100K in a burning pile of cash that resembled an engine, let's just take it as read that there are ways to spend money on 911 engines, but if you want a durable 450-500 naturally aspirated engine, $50K is just plain wasteful.

All that said, one of my "dreams" is an air-cooled 500 horse naturally aspirated engine in a 993 ... and no, I don't think I can make that happen much short of $50K ... : )

There are numerous 4.0 996 cups running around since 2003, using these very pistons and sleeves, as developed/built by Wrightwood racing in So Cal. It's proven.

You're right though, the 997 platform is an improvement and we are borrowing parts from it to achieve our hp goals. But, I own a 996, not a 997.

Finally, trying to "rationalize" anything Porsche is like screwing for virginity. Better yet, punishing someone on a hunger strike by sending them to bed without any supper. If you wanna play, you gotta pay.

And if Serge finally decides to give it the full strip treatment-
We got a winner!!! : ). I don't think neone would cavitate a 4.0 Rs even a 3.8rs- price point for those cars still way more $$$$ to convert. Mike

I think the "sweet spot" (of rationalization) is the 997.1 3.6 RS -- a great platform for the factory 4.0, but a lot more expensive overall project and I think the enjoyment and performance of a 996.2 3.6 GT3 is ideal (since they're incredibly undervalued in the USA market now) as the starting point for a "stripper" track car. Then again, they're all just gateway drugs to a Cup. : )

Seems like affordable 6GT3s are hard to find lately. Late 2009/early 2010 there were nice cars in the high 40's. You don't even want to know what I stole mine for! In less than 5 years, I bet clean 996s will be more expensive than 997.1s.

I think you will achieve your goal of 480 HP. It is a great project, and a 4.0 996 GT3 will be incredible.

How's Dave doing anyways? Haven't seen him since his first outing in the spec box at Laguna.

I had a guy call me today with a 997 C4S that he wants to put H&R springs on. We discussed GT3's while on the horn. This quote of yours was the exact subject that we covered after he mentioned he may be interested in a GT3 some day.
I reiterated that the 6 GT3 and maybe the 7.2 GT3 were the two to hope for. But that the 6.2 was the one for me. And that is that.

I'm on my 7th track day with mine this year (got the car in Dec), and every day on the track I LOVE it more. It's just so basic and simple; what you see is what you get. I may not yet be enough of a driver to test the limits and to really assess/comment on its behavior when there, but what I CAN say is this: It's an HONEST machine!
