996 GT3 4 Liter
While many are scrambling to find an RS 4.0 allocation, I have decided to build my own 4 liter GT3.
https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/_P...ter%20logo.jpg First things first, the engine has to come out. After removing the airbox, draining and disconnecting the coolant system, evacuating the A/C, disconnecting power steering lines, fuel lines, engine harness, misc vacuum lines, etc, the car goes up in the air. https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-c...QZs/s800/2.jpg Once the plastic underbody panels are removed, we gain access to everything else that has to be disconnected: axles, cross members, sway bar, starter, ground, transmission cables, clutch slave, additional coolant lines including the tranny cooler, and of course engine/transmission mounts. The whole unit drops out. https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-8...8pE/s800/3.jpg It’s massive. https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-L...Ssk/s800/4.jpg The engine and transmission is split and the clutch is removed. Stock flywheel isn’t light. An RS LWFW will be taking its place. https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-M...fL0/s800/7.jpg Clutch plate still looks good. https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-1...bF8/s800/8.jpg Two studs are pulled and the engine is secured with allens. https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-o...Q3g/s800/5.jpg https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-N...Y2o/s800/6.jpg Out comes the oil tank and associated lines. https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-L...yhA/s800/9.jpg https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-x...ts/s800/10.jpg Next the intake manifold. https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-m...2M/s800/11.jpg https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-D...kk/s800/12.jpg https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-_...Hg/s800/13.jpg https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-y...IM/s800/14.jpg Oil cooler and cooling manifold come out. https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-U...vk/s800/15.jpg https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-E...vY/s800/16.jpg Alternator and A/C compressor comes next. https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-b...HU/s800/17.jpg Power steering pump and reservoir. https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-D...uc/s800/18.jpg Water pump comes out last. https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-I...kE/s800/19.jpg We are down to a long block. https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-0...GU/s800/20.jpg All the parts are stashed on a cart, and the transmission sits nearby. Once the case is split and sent off to machining, the differential will be pulled and rebuilt with Guard internals. https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-c...BA/s800/21.jpg In the engine room is a freshly rebuild air cooled engine waiting to go into a genuine 914-6. Numerous flat-6 engine parts everywhere – accumulated through years of engine building experience. https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-C...C0/s800/22.jpg My engine is next to a 993 GT2 Evo 3.8. Cool, huh? https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-m...mk/s800/23.jpg We need more motivation in this room. Ah yes, the Wurth calendar! https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-K...YQ/s800/24.jpg Cam covers come off with the motivation of big orange. https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-j...fU/s800/25.jpg https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-E...PI/s800/26.jpg Out come the chain tensioners. https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-J..._E/s800/27.jpg Porsche specialty tools are used to hold the cam gears in order to loosen the nuts. https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-A...oA/s800/28.jpg Lifters are now exposed. These are placed into a labeled bin so that they can be reused in the same locations. https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-E...GM/s800/29.jpg Timing chain housings and cam housings come out. https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-k...z4/s800/30.jpg Then the heads. https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-D...4g/s800/31.jpg Parts lay on the work table. https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-e...zQ/s800/32.jpg https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-k...sw/s800/33.jpg Cylinders slide off exposing the pistons. https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-s...o4/s800/34.jpg https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-u...Bc/s800/35.jpg Pistons are unclipped. https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-k...rY/s800/36.jpg https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-4...xk/s800/37.jpg Time to split the case. https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/--...8A/s800/38.jpg The engine stand is struck with a hammer to shock the case. https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-C...Lc/s800/39.jpg https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-M...tQ/s800/40.jpg The internals are beautiful. https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-j...eM/s800/41.jpg That's all for tonight - the past few days have been exhausting! |
Thanks for sharing! Having rebuilt 5 911 aircooled engines at home, it is comforting to know that they are the same inside. That is bullet proof design tested for years at race tracks! Please show how that cams are timed, that is such a pain on A/C engines! Thanks again! Here's my 3.2l engine...

Damn - I can't visit RL without seeing some car porn!
Now, come on - post more of it! |
Now THAT is a good way to start my day! Thanks for posting.
|
wow.
|
you crazy bastard! I love it! : )
what you gonna do with the ecu? |
Serge, this is your car right? Why did you decide to do this, was there something wrong with the engine, or did you just want to go 4.0?
|
Subscribed.. !!
The local shop here did a 4.0L conversion on a 6-3 as well (last year, I think?) with great result.. looking forward to seeing more of these monsters.. !! |
Yes, it's my car. The 4.0 idea came up over a couple beers and was finalized with the RS 4.0 introduction. :D Guess what they say is true, all important business transactions happen over booze. The engine came out of the car just this last Friday.
The last picture is the engine in it's current state. The oil pump and crank will be pulled later this week and the case/cylinders sent off to the machine shop. Will keep you posted. |
Sweet!!! U don't horse around. Ne thoughts on stripping as well? Mike
|
Kick ass! Interested in all the upgrades you are implementing and your ECU tuning plan.
|
Will a stroker crank be used to achieve the 4.0L displacement or just from bore? (the new 4.0RS uses the crank from the RSR, so a different crank was used.. just for comparison)
Also, what's the expected redline on the new setup? |
With such a huge power upgrade ne chance the suspension needs to be addressed? Stock suspension is already too soft for our lowly 3.6. Mike
|
Never ending quest.. more engine, lighter weight, more rigidity, better suspension, more tires, bigger brakes.. ha! :D
|
Another upped-displacement project....hmmmm....this is a great thing for our community.
Do we have a ballpark of cost? Thanks, TomK |
