Track alignment is a must. Search for the Kussmaul alignment I posted here years ago.

Rear toe links - they prevent the rear toe from being upset by even small bumps and costing you an alignment every time you use the car.

You will probably want R compound tires to truly appreciate the handling. Michelin Cups preferred.

Do not change gears abruptly - pause a heartbeat between shifts and the syncros will last forever. Snap shift and you'll be spending money on the transmission in short order.

I put 25,000 miles (42,000 KMs to be exact) on my 6GT3 and did not have a problem with the differential so YMMV.

The car is essentially bullet-proof and stands up to track days without complaint. Better than anything else I've seen. Change the engine oil often and the tranny fluid every ten track days and you'll have a lot of fun with no hassles.

Best,
+1 to everything Bob says.... He was a key contributer to my purchase of my 996 GT3 during the summer of '06. I can attest to the $1K per day track costs which include consumables and the track fee. The biggest expense is tires. I run Michelin Sport Cups and run aggressive alignment settings and only get 4-5 track days out of those $1200 tires. I am a detail freak so can forward my spending spreadsheet if anyone is interested...

These cars are amazing on the track. Definitely worth the price of admission.

Good luck!

I don't have a clue bout the $1000 day to run the gt3. Are u talking about to/fro to the track. Does that include the lap dances as well when I stay up at thill? Mike

Good choice. I can't imagine it can get much better than with this baby. Ditch the ceramics, upgrade the crank shaft pulley to a RS, and buy spare splitters. Then drive the wheels off of it. You'll wear a smile forever more.

Blake,

I am surprised that you are getting so few days out of a set of MPSCs. They are pretty durable tires. Is your track unusually rough on tires? I have about 10 days on mine, and they are only 1/2 spent! Most of these were at Mid Ohio, which isn't too bad on tires. I have a track alignment, and haven't driven it much on the street.

track fee 250
fuel on track two tanks 150
amortized tire cost: 300
pads: 100
rotors: 100
amortized service cost: 100

i haven't even factored in amortized engine, tranny and LSD rebuild costs.

996FLT6 - I checked my spreadsheet. My total cost per track day averages $760, but did not include other maintenance that Mooty points out above.... Here are the details:

Track Time: average around $300/day at MMP in Utah
Tires: $250/day in usage
Brake Pads: $50/day
Brake Fluid: $10/day
Brake Rotors:$30/day
Oil: $20/day (change every 4-5 track days)
Gas: $100/day

Chuck - Regarding my camber, I run greater than -3 up front as the GT3 is purely my track car. Furthermore, Sport Cups lose their grip once they get into the 20s for heat cycles, so that limits the usage to 4-5 days. From a wear perspective, I could get 6-7 days out of them, but they feel shot at that point...

when you say ONE DAY, how many track miles are we talking about.
many ppl do 3--4 20 min sessions per day. that's less than 100 miles.
if i do less than 150 miles i day, you will hear a lot of profanity out of my foul mouth. as such my variable costs per day seems higher than most.

for example, pads last about 1300 miles (front wear out faster, but let's assume even wear for now), that's about 7 days for me. a set of pads is roughly 700 (f and r), so 100 a day ;-(

We run 4-5 25-30 minute sessions depedning on the club per day. One club lets us run 4 30-minute sessions plus an open 2 hours from 3-5pm (Bob Read's LappingDays). On average, I put 200-250 miles on the car per track day...

Hope all is well with you John. I have not been on Rennlist that often since July. As Kent in Vegas is fixing up my car, I am easing back into the Rennlist community. Thinking about the GT3 was just too painful!

you must not use brakes much and track is very smooth.
nevermind, you store the car there. 1/2 of my tires' life gets used up as i drive to /from track. i am constantly flipping tires on the rim to maximize them. so much so, my local tire shop actually sends their truck to my house to pick up tires. as they thought it was funny i would deliver two front tires to them in a GT3 and then one rear at a time in the same GT3. once i borrowed a loaner boxster and stuffed all four in there. boy was i a road hazard. never doing that again (they are just 5 miles away).

I'm guessing the comment is in conjunction with an RS LWFW being installed. Never heard of this being necessary with a stock FW setup.

Thank you Mooty, if i factored everything in like maintenance it would be even more, I change all fluids in between track days and that starts to add up, factor in towing gas and consumables. it's even more. I'm 4-5 hours from the closest track.

15k for 30 track days!?! I wish. you said 7-8 sets of MSPCs? that are near 2k right now you're already over your estimate. Throw in brakes, gas, and maintenance and that equals denial or your wife is on rennlist.

Absolutely, the RS pulley is necessary for the LWFW or you will get vibrations and damaging harmonics.
