frayed,
I would keep your 996 GT3 and enjoy it fully while you wait for the 997 GT3. (My sources tell me that will be Fall 2006.) The 996 GT3 is best looking 996 IMO.
Without a doubt, the 997 version will be better. Even if it has the same HP, the suspension and handling on the 997 is more refined, and it has wonderful traction in hard cornering. (I speak from track experience in both cars). I can imagine that a 997S - de-contented, and with a lowered suspension, higher rate springs, adjustable stabilizer bars, and LSD would be fantastic!
And if for some reason the 997 GT3 turns out to be a dud, you will still have your GT3!

Quoting Super Darius' post on Rennteam:
"Guys..
I came back two hours ago from the Nurburgring..
Friday i had a talk with Walter Rohrl and he tell me that the 997 GT3 will have around 400/405 HP,the engine is 3.8 dry sump and there will be a special suspension system, like PASM to increase the hardness of the suspension,NO DSG/PDK
The RS will come an year later, but not sure if with a power increase, more likely only less heavy... "

I guess I still remember the MK1 which never made it here and some really high margin, somewhat disappointing models, such as the Turbo S
I also don't want to get one of the first cars. I had too many reliability issues with early Porsche in the past.
This said, I really hope it will come here and will match our expectations.

The significance of the 996 GT3 (MkI and MkII) lies in the engine and transaxle. The chassis, suspension, brakes and other parts are neither here nor there. Just get any C4 and it's cost-effective to recreate the handling and dynamics. But the power-train is the key.
I'm optimistic. But we won't know what we've ordered until we get official specs from PCNA. Waiting...

You guy's are crazy if you think Porsche did notice the new Z06.....the 997 GT3 will have all the good parts in it with the 3.8 dry sump engine....make no mistake it will be faster.
The 996 GT3 with gearing changes, a little weight loss will be right there with the new Z06.

Anyhoot. I'm keen to see the prelim spec, order guide or any details on the GT3. I would like to think we'll see it in the metal at Frankfurt, but even that might be optimistic. Here's hoping. I have an order with Carlsen, but no dates and no time-line to spec the order options yet. There's some alleged insider talk of January shipments, but I can't make sense of that being UK, Europe or US. January is a nice time of year in California, I'll take it. The dealer info suggests more like mid-year. Groan.

frayed, you are indeed nuts, in a cool way of course. too bad i can't use two sets of motons else i take them off your hands.
i love my gt3. can't really drive it well yet (or ever), but having a blast. i understand why you have to keep on changing. i pretty much have had every iteration of 996's (other than GT2), some versions more than once. about 8 or 9 of them over 3 years. but it just takes too much time to bond with the car and to set it up that way i like it. so for the time being, i am keeping the GT3 indefinitely.
but hey, go ahead and buy the 997gt3. i need some bad influence.

The way I see it is this...
Go ahead and isntall your goodies, etc. ENJOY the car. When the new one comes out, go check it out. Let a few other people that "gotta be the first ones to have it" get it, and see how they like it compared to the 996. If it looks good, then pursue it!
Might as well enjoy what you have now as you never know when you may no longer be able to do so! ENJOY man!!! Don't let the future hold you back!
