Frayed: I'm with you. Each day I drive the 997 I'm amazed how improved it is over my 996, in every way. I can only imagine what it might be like with a GT drivetrain.

Chris: Doesn't Porsche already sell a "trackable" 911 with creature comforts and a 3.8 wet sump? Would Porsche really drop the dry sump just as Chevy has added it to the vette?

Just my 2 cents.

my $0.02

the 996 Gt3 is great. tear the tires off the car.

when the 997 gt3 comes out, buy it. its going to be a step up. 20 more horse (yes it will likely be 400 hp conservatively rated as usual and dry sump), better aero (see the slots in the front, that way improves front end downforce), better brakes/cooling, better wheels/tires (19" geometry), better suspension and handling. basically, its going to be the same sort of step up as Gt3cup from 996->997. will it be "revolutionary"? no. its just going to be better and faster around a track. last i checked, the '73 rs was a great car. the 996 gt3 is a great car. is the 996 gt3 a revolutionary improvement? in many ways, no, its still a rear engined 6 banger.

so what if the c6z06 is faster? - the question is will it be as good of a drivers car? i doubt it, as porsche always makes a more precise instrument. the GT3 is like a Stratocaster, or maybe a Stradivarius. If you want a 500hp meat cleaver, you can already buy a GTS race preped Viper.

my vote is make the 996 gt3 the car you want it to be. if putting the motons are going to make it better, great, put 'em in and drive the pants off it. put your deposit down on the 997 gt3 and don't think about it until its out and enjoy what you got. when it comes out, assess then.

i'm #1 for the 997 gt3 at my dealership ... and yes its coming to the US

This is what i think about :
The 997gt3 will be Technically better but the aesthetic one of the 996 gt3... it's 1000 times better! I do not love the bettle eyes (made from Koyto! Not made from Hella/ Germany!!!) the Audi/dashboard style and all the cheap details of the 997 type...
No,no! I do not have doubts!
964 RS,993RS,993GT2,996 GT3 MK1 and MK2 forever!
For me it's ended a period of pure sport Porsche all made in Germany.
Remember the dry-sump with ipressed the number: 964XXXXXX??? And now?! The sunroof! The SMG! The PSM?!?! And maybe also a big video on the dashboard...
Where is the soul of the Rennsport?
(Sorry but this is always IMHO)

Ciao!

The 996GT3 is a good looking 996, but it's still UGLY IMHO, everything beneath the skin I can live with. The 997GT3, on the otherhand, is more what a 911 should look like. (I guess it's the previous 993 owner in me writing).

I think you should sell now, and then get a 997GT3 followed by an F430 challenge.

Seriously, does the 996 GT3 lack anything? I don't think so.

I drove a 997S and basically that motor has none of panache of the GT3 unit.
It is fast but does not have the punch.

Of late, thinking that the 997 GT3 will be here in the US in a year, I found myself losing enthusiasm for the 996. In other words, I'm thinking that the 996 may be a short term relationship and not a 'keeper'. So, I have Motons that have not been installed, just sitting in my office, and I've held off ordering the bar/seats/harnesses I was planning on.

I think I'm psycho. Please talk sense into me.

I have to say that on the track the Z06's do not beat the 996 GT3 up. In fact the Vette's cant stop or turn. They haul *** on the straights and then slide all over the place on the infields. If its a tight course the Vette's should just not even waste the fuel

The 996 isn't pretty, but the 996 GT3 is one of the best looking "911"s, ever. IMO

It lacks a wider body with a "waist" and "hips". I could live with the front and rear though.

I agree. It's arguably the best 911 ever(996 GT3). Lower drag coefficient than the 997 with those bloated 997 rear wheel wells dragging in the wind. I also don't like VW headlights on my Porsche's....each to their own I guess...

I think sage advice.

My bet is this: While we won't know how much of a better car it is until it arrives, the short time I've been around Porsche it seems to me that Porsche never fails to improve the 911 with every iteration based on my study of the marque. Will it be good enough to pry the 996 from my deathgrip (yes, I think the current GT3 rocks), only time will tell. But if the 997S is any indication, my bet is that PAG will again pry money from my wallet.

I'm trying here to be a realist, that based on my history with cars, eventually I'll move onto something else despite my best intentions of "OK this is it, my dream car that I'll end up giving to my son one day".

I can't drive my 996 GT3 to its fullest. I won't be able to drive the 997 variant to its fullest either. I don't really care about Chevys (have driven and considered the current Z06 and new C6) as they don't provide the driving experience that gets me all giddy.

As good as a driving experience my E36 M3 provided, I moved onto a C4S, and as good as that, I moved onto a C2 (prefering RWD), then onto a GT3. If the new version provides that much more of an engaging experience, I'll likely have to buy one.

But in the meantime, I'll run what I brung with little attention paid to the next new thing.

Jeff: Understand and agree; mostly. While I have no interest in owning one, the new chevy continues to raise the performance bar and "lower" the price bar. We all benefit from such competition.

quite untrue, arnaud. my car is due next summer.

as for what it will be like vs 996 gt3, P has shown that each car is better than the last, but will the 997 gt3 be better [performance-wise, not status wise] than the z06? mine arrives this november

The only thing I don'tlike about the GT3 is the mk2 wing, looks a little ricey to me, I much prefer the mk1 or the new 997aerokit wing.
