But in the meantime, I'll run what I brung with little attention paid to the next new thing.
Good choice frayed, great thread. Made me think hard about my choices too. Glad you are going to run with the 996 and add the upgrades you have. While we all know the 997 will be better: since when hasn't the new generation upped the antie? Enjoy the 996 GT3, run the pants off it for all your worth, then assess the 997 and if it warrants it repeat the process!

as for what it will be like vs 996 gt3, P has shown that each car is better than the last, but will the 997 gt3 be better [performance-wise, not status wise] than the z06? mine arrives this november
Watt,
I'm confused. Are you getting the 997 GT3 next summer or in November? Or are you getting a 997 GT3 next summer and a Z06 in November?

I don't have any source. My dealer tells me it was officially announced in Europe, which obviously is false. I'll just believe it when I see it, and will probably order when I get the actual specs and decide whether I like it or not.

I guess I still remember the MK1 which never made it here and some really high margin, somewhat disappointing models, such as the Turbo S

I also don't want to get one of the first cars. I had too many reliability issues with early Porsche in the past.

This said, I really hope it will come here and will match our expectations.

Does the fact that the V-8 in the new Le Mans prototype is repute to be a dry sump have any bearing on future Porsche GT cars?

If I had a GT3 I would hold on to it tightly, it's the only true Porsche anymore. That said I'm still interested to see the 997 variants, hopefully they won't be priced ridiculously. I'm not too optimistic and very disappointed to hear the new X51 is gonna cost over $16K, what are they thinking?????

In 1973 you could buy a Dino Ferrari for that price.

No,no! I do not have doubts!
964 RS,993RS,993GT2,996 GT3 MK1 and MK2 forever!
For me it's ended a period of pure sport Porsche all made in Germany.
Remember the dry-sump with ipressed the number: 964XXXXXX??? And now?! The sunroof! The SMG! The PSM?!?! And maybe also a big video on the dashboard...
Where is the soul of the Rennsport?
(Sorry but this is always IMHO)

Ciao!
You think the 996 is ending the pure sport Porsche made in Germany? I find most say that happened from the 993 to 996.....Similiar comments could be made about the 993 to 996....The air-cooling, the quality dashes, lots of things done by hand, etc....personally I think the 996 will prove/has proven to be the least valuable model of the 911 line. Low mile 99's often sell below 993 pricing and near 964 pricing. The 996 GT3, even though a seperate car, will suffer from the 996 stigma.....by most all accounts the 997 is a better car then the 996. In reguards to the GT3 version of the 997, noone knows for sure how it will be set up so anything on it is just speculation.

Did you buy the GT3 because you really liked it? Did you get it to run at as many track days as possible and to improve your own driving skills? Or, did you buy it mostly for status and to own the 'latest and greatest'? If it is the latter, you will never be satisfied as there will always be faster and better cars coming out. If you have the money to constantly be trading up, go for it. New cars are a blast. Otherwise, just enjoy the GT3. It's a great car.

Come one man where do you get that info?!

From internet rumours? And then go ahead and spread that wrong information around like it was confirmed truth?

I agree.

To say 996 GT3 (and I mean 996 GT3, not 996 GT3 RS) is the last "Rennsport" isn't really the "truth".
For example, isn't 996 GT3 heavier than regular 996? Not very "RS"...
And then those cupholders... Not very "RS" either...
How about those doors fancy panels? I wouldn't say they're very "RS"...

IMO 996 GT3 RS is a "RS" a'la 911 RS, 964 RS & 993 RS but 996 GT3, even though awesome car, has too much compromises to be called "Rennsport" (that's why Porsche doesn't call it Rennsport either...).
