Losing enthusiasm for the GT3
#17
I remember you picked up your GT3 not too long after I picked up mine, which was only 4 months ago. And if memory serves me right, this is your 3rd porsche in a year
Anyways, my suggestion is wait 'til the 997 GT3 is here before selling your 996 GT3. You may take a bigger depreciation but at least you know for sure if the 997 is what you really want. Afterall, there are so many questions still unconfirmed.

.

I posted as a plea, so folks can talk me out of it and tell me 'be happy with what you have.' I know, I know, always looking forward disables one's ability to enjoy what you've got but I have a hard time not leaning forward.
Cos, what wheels?

1) In reality, your car most likely already has 400 hp, so the "upgrade to 410" is a sham. You can chip it for peanuts and get 20 more hp, exhaust etc. You can lower the weight and get great effects. If hp is an issue.
2) I've put or am in the processing of putting in $30,000 in upgrades to my GT3 (mostly suspension, track prep and handling, I don't need any more hp thank you), so I'm committed and it is better than any stock 997 will be. It is also becoming pretty adjustable.
3) Be honest with yourself, if you have to have the lastest and greatest, sell it. But, I don't believe the 997 GT3 will be a dry sump, it looks like the new RSRs will be wet sumps, so why would they make a dry sump GT3? They might, but I doubt it. Think about it.
4) I personally like the 996 GT3 looks much better than the spy photos, but you don't know till it comes out.
5) The 996 GT3 is a timeless and proven classic. Many 1973 RS's were traded in on 930 turbo's too. Which would you rather have today?
6) I don't believe the 997 GT3 will be here till later 2007 or 2008. The factory cannot even get the new 997 cup cars out to meet the demand. Hopefully, the GT3 will share as many motor sport parts as the current one does.
How's that for a start. Just trying to help

The rumour is they won't federalize a 997 w/o a sunroof (can't believe they have to do that- so stupid) but if that is true the new GT3 will have one. I like the fact it doesn't have one- my son's GTI 337 also didn't come with a sunroof and that makes it special for him too...
And I agree about the SMG- I had a E46 M3 with SMG before the GT3- got tired of it after a couple months and wanted a real 6 speed again!

997GT3 with less than 480Hp ==> No thanks.
The 996GT3 runs against the 360CS and the C5 Z06 pretty good. These three cars have quite a match.
Ferrari will release a F430 Challenge and GM a C6 Z06. Both cars will spank a 997GT3 with less than 480Hp. At that point a 997GT3 won't be a special car, just an underdog.
Enjoy the GT3 while you wait. Once the 997GT3 is out, just remember to drive on the right lane to let the faster cars pass by you.

Congrats on the 1k post JG Sr. By the time the 997 GT3 comes out you can use your AARP card for parts discounts and the little blue plaque card to get a front spot on the grid.

To me, my 996 GT3 seems the culmination of what can be done with a car that has the engine over the rear axle. A true step up from here will be to some mid-engined freak of a car (read: CGT).
