Anybody get their new Car and Driver?
The latest Car and Driver has an article on the latest Z06 Corvette.
As this forum has noted before, the early 'net buzz discussed the virtues of the latest Z06 Corvette- 3130 pounds, 500 HP, Titanium rods, Titanium intake valves, dry sump engine, 6 piston brakes etc. All of this was brought to question as not probable.
Well it was fact and more facts are below:
-Steel frame of normal Corvette replaced with aluminum frame saving 132 pounds.
-Aluminum cast front section of normal Corvette replaced with magnesium casting.
-Fiberglass fenders in front replaced with Carbon fiber fenders
-Floor of car done in Carbon fiber/Balsa wood composite
-Transmission has oil/water cooler which circulates the cooled gearbox oil in an oil/oil cooler to cool the differential oil
-19X12 inch rear wheels with 325 tires
-18X10 front wheels with 275 tires
-Flared fenders to accomodate the tires
-Front 6 piston brakes have 6 individual pads in each caliper, 14 inch rotors
-Rear 4 piston brakes have 13.4 inch rotors
-Price unknown but thought to be $60-65K
-Engine is 7208 cc and makes 500 HP @ 6200 rpm, 475 lb-ft torque at 4800 rpm- 385 lb-ft of torque are available at 1600 rpm
0 to 60=3.8 seconds
0 to 100=7.7 seconds
11.7 second 127 mph quarter mile
The rest of the magazine is full of performance 4 door hardware (Porsches next foray after trucks I understand), Chrysler's new Viper coupe, the cover has a proposed Chrysler Hemi V8/Viper Chassis car to match the Corvette.
How long can Porsche milk their past to provide their future and get away with it in this market????

I'd like to see how many of these Z06's they'll sell in Europe with the weak dollar and good fuel economy of the Vette (>25mpg). They may not export the Z06 though...

I think the first ones will be late Fall-05, AFAIK...

I don't have gold chains or the requisite gray chest hair for a Vette, though. Maybe the new one will break the driver stereotype.
Also, I'm not sure if I'd want the first model year of this one. With so much new, could be a lot of teething pains.

Three Wheelin'
They usualy come out with the new model Vettes in late July early August....It will be very close in performance to the new Ferrari....A car with that kind of rwtq will be easy to go fast at the track.
I read somewhere a while back that GM/Corvette has there eye on the Porsche customer....they were amazed at how much a Porsche can go up in price with cosmetic trim options..........It's seems to be working......Just when i bought a Porsche for the first time after 20 years of Corvettes....Oh well

That is truly astonishing. How could they possibly offer all that for 65k?
11.7 in the quarter mile is ridiculous.
12 inch rear tires?
385 ft lbs at 1600 RPM?
*Drool*
Porsche's going under :-/
And I think the sterotype will be broken with this one.
