Default GT3 Times at Lime Rock/the Glen

Howdy,

I'm looking into my next track car and was interested in what lap times a GT3 runs at Lime Rock and the Glen. Please let me know of any mods to the car, including different tires.

Thank you in advance!!

Roy

Lap times are very dependent on who drives the car but I can tell you that the GT3 is a very fast car on the track as delivered.

I drove a stock GT3 with slicks and track alignment at Pocono this May and it handles very much like a well behave track car. It gives you confidence to push to its limits. The 8000 red line helps.

However, the GT3 would be much faster by making improvements to its suspension.

But why would you want to do that if you can buy a cup car which has full race suspension and a cage by the factory which is better than the stock GT3.

You can buy a slightly used cup car for the price of a new GT3 or may be less.

As far as track car concern I think a used cup car make more sense than a street GT3 unless you plan to drive the car on the street regularly.

Zblu - Have Been there and Done That, one should consider the trade-offs. While I agree that a Cup car is a better tool on the race track, you have to be prepared to buy a truck and trailer. Of course you need a place to park the rig where it won't get ripped off - a racecar on a trailer is a very nice target for thieves. The nice thing about a GT3 is that you can slap on a set of Corsa's or Dunlops Race, drive it to the track, enjoy it and then turn on the AC and drive home.

I prefer the latter and since there are pplenty of GT3's like mine to play with, the track time is very enjoyable.

Did anyone find an actual lap time in those posts for a gt3 at lime rock? I must have missed it somewhere. I'm curious how it compares...

I guess it all depends on the definition of a track car.

The gt3 cup make sense when a track car means a dedicated track car which one already have tow vehicle, trailier....

The gt3 street make sense when a track car means a street car that goes to track.

My definition of a track car is a car that don't go on the street.

Why? What are the differences between the two? The output is nearly the same i know that. I thought the only differences were exhaust and intake mainly.

brian,

i don't know why cup cars needs rebuilts more often. i do know the two blocks are very similar. but my mechanic who works on 996 of all sorts and raced GT3R (the early version of the cars run by TRG) told me that when i was thinking of getting a cup car instead of street GT3.

For one, the Cup cars run at much higher rpm's most of the time while racing. They are under much more stress than any of our street cars. Another reason is the fact that they need to keep all internal components running within specific tolerances for racing. This, of course, does not necessarily apply to a Cup car being used for occasional races and/or DE's.

I wonder if you shift at about 500 - 1000 rpm before red line will entext the cup car engine and would it have similiar life span as the street gt3

Lap times from dry practice during the Lime Rock PCA race this weekend. My car and that of Keith Alexander are stock without any modifications except for a roll bar and kill switch. Mine is at factory as delivered ride height with -2.0 camber in all 4 corners. Keith's is about 10-15mm lower with slightly more camber. Rafael's car is the lowest of the the three, and has additional changes in the suspension. During this session, KA was on Dunlop, I was on old MPSC, and RL was on new MPSC. I also do the same lap time with the Dunlop SSR DOT tire, and in fact have gone 2/10ths quicker but conditions were more optimal with cooler temps. For comparison, cup cars were running in the 57.5-59.0 range during the same part of the day but of course on slicks.

The car was exceptional in the rain and we were mixed in with the cup cars and fastest group cars for a consolidated qualifying given the wet conditions. Keith and I were on Dunlop rains for this session given the enhanced safety factor for that tire. This is a fair tire to tire comparison with the cup cars and other full race cars. KA is listed as in GT2R, but he is still in his stock GT3 in class B.

The car driven by spencer ***(on pole) is a 2004 cup car that did a 2:10 at Sebring earlier this year when driven by Dominik Farnbacher.

The GT3 in stock trim/stock height will do a 2:09 at WG on slicks and a 2:12 on MPSC.

Default What tires and wheels?

For those of you who track your cars, what is your practice with street and track tires and wheels? Do you have a set of track wheels that you switch to for a track session? If so, do you switch at home and then drive to the track or do you switch at the track? If you switch at the track, do you carry the wheels in the car or do you have another vehicle travel with you to carry them?

Would I be happy driving to the track on street tires and stock wheels, running the track and then driving home? I think the street rubber would be fine for me for quite some time, but I'd hate to mess up the pretty stock wheels on the track.....
