Default 996 GT3 vs 996 Cup Car

There was an Excellence or Pano article recently that outline the differences between the GT3 and the cup car. Does any one remember what month it was in, or is it online somewhere. I don't have the issue anymore.

Thanks.

I believe it was the April issue, you can always call them and order back issues.

There was a GT3 cup car at Summit Point this past weekend pretty neat. What do these cars weigh? It had almost no standard interior stuff beyond the dash and it did have a few lightweight bits here and there but with the full cage, fire system and built in jacks got me to wondering what it does weigh.

There are people out there claiming the new GT3 is faster than a 2002 or earlier cup car.

Does it make sense?

There was an excellent comparison in Panorama. Without having it front of me, I believe it was 11/03. Call PCA or go online. They sell back issues.

Hmm

NO...

Cup cars are 2550 to 2600 lbs with proper race suspensions and run slicks or hoosiers.

No way street stock GT3 can hang with a 996 GT3 CUP from any year on any race track.

I thoguht I read in Road and Track by Kim Wolfkill about the cup car being about 8 seconds faster than a stock GT3. I will have to see if I can find that issue...I think it was the issue where he was the guest driver in the Cup Car race.

Thanks Viken, that was the article I was thinking of...but there was another part talking about the cup car itself and not the series...I thought it was in the same issue...but search on the site didn't show up.

It might be true. I just got back from a BMW event at Watkins Glen and there was a guy there with a '01 Supercup car who said he was hitting 145 on the back straight. My digital was showing 155 and I'm running the stock Michelins! I'm sure his lap times were quicker but the '04 GT3 is no slouch on the straights.

In a straight line they are about the same. I would wager that a road gt3rs properly set up with slicks and gutted of all interior trim would be quicker.

Stock speedometers are horribly inaccurate. Don't give to much credence to them. Better to check the rpm in a given gear and do a calculation from there.

Tw comments:

1) Cup cars are short geared and set up for a lot of down-force. I was lapping with a 2003 CUP car and I came out of the corner first. I gave a passing signal and figured "it's a race car on slicks" and did not lift. The Cup car closed the gap quickly at first but by the time we were both at 100 MPH or so he sat beside me all the way down the straight until I relented. We both laughed about it afterwards. The Cup car had a fresh engine too. We attribute the result to the amount of downforce on his Cup car. OTOH he can shift gears in sweepers without even a twitch ...!

2) On our track a well driven cup car on slicks runs 1:41. A 2004 GT3 on Corsa's runs 1:52 and slicks would take it down by 2-3 seconds which seems to match the observation from Kim Wolfkill.

While it's fun to speculate - I agree that a street GT3 cannot equal a Cup car on a track.

The older cups are not that fast. The GT3 would need Hoosiers or Slicks to run evenly, but it seems possible from my experience that it would be faster on some tracks. Bottom line is that the driver differences would make any comprison in a DE or the like tough. Need a scientific experiment.
