I’ve had 2 996’s, 1 997.1, and lots of seat time in a 991. It really just comes down to what you want and what niche you are trying to fill in your stable. If I wanted something to daily or semi-daily (And could afford it), for sure 991 no questions asked. But for something fun on the weekends it didn’t work for me. There are a lot of faster cars. A GTR is faster, a new Corvette is faster hell the new mustangs are way faster. But the total package of raw, unique, analog, nimble, screaming high rpm, reliability,...and cost, no brainer for me. If I were rich I’d have a 7.2rs but they are literally double the cost of a really nice 6-3! Just can’t justify it. And yes, the performance delta between a nicely set up 6 and a 7.1 is really negligible. It’s why I sold my 7.1 and got the cheaper 6-3 when I added my gallardo.
I've had a good amount of seat time in 991's both GT3 and RS variants. The .1 GT3 is literally the perfect street car. Great power, sound, PDK is actually addictive, and everything that's said about that last 500 rpm's to 9k is true its amazing! With all that being said it doesn't have the same special feel that the 6gt3 does. Its an amazing car but its perfection is almost its detriment. I can definitely see how there would be a void if you went from 996 to 991.
Im going to add a 997.1 RS to the list. I like Pumpkins 🎃 . Please add thoughts between 6-3: Pumpkin: and 991.1 GT3
Thanks all
996 vs 997.1 RS? RS is beautiful in some color combinations, but worth nearly the double the price of your 6 GT3? Not to me and I've considered it often. 96% the same car mechanically, Is Aesthetics worth ~ $65K? Not to me.
Thanks Marv. I’m looking into cost of ownership of 991. The centerlocks alone look cool but the tools and effort required to deal w wheel changes sure makes it less appealing. You mentioned 997.2 RS, wonder if you meant 997.1 RS. I won’t spend 997.2 money for sure. Do you prefer the .2 over the .1? I like the idea of the .1 because it’s considered analog, hydraulic steering, orange, etc. I’m looking at one today, so will have a much better comparison to the 6-3 after I drive it. I have not driven the 991.1 yet.
I think that you'll find that 997.1 and .2 pricing is similar +/- $10k in many cases. True, a special .2 might sell for $180, but I think several have sold for 140 - 150 (anecdotal evidence only)
I'll take my .1 RS in silver / orange with orange wheels please.
Thank you all for your well considered responses. I appreciate the collective wisdom you all bring to this great forum. I brought the GT3 back home from storage yesterday, and indeed remembered what a fulfilling handful the car truly is. It’s an incredible machine. I had a chance to see a 997.1 RS in Orange yesterday and all I can say is WOW. What a machine. Feels similar to the 6 in many ways, but fit and finish is that much better, and that color.... and it’s an RS👍
The 991.1 GT3 is also a brawny beauty. Much easier to drive and and Fast. I appreciate understanding the maintenance costs of these, this I had not considered. Changing the wheels alone looks like quite an exercise. At this point I’m in the middle of deciding what to do. Anyone interested in a well set up 6-3 in white?
I have both and I dont want to sell either
6.3 as a daily is not possible here in Belgium due to very bad roads, 991 GT3 with lift is not a problem at all
For the track I prefer the 996
i just read your link above on your experience. If you had it to do again, knowing what you know now, would you do the RS again?
Thanks,
Chris
100%. I’ve had very limited seat team since buying but I would definitely do it again. I’m seeing a lot of love for the 996 at the moment but time had come for me to follow the RS dream.
For a track car, the 991 is hard to beat. On the street, its too fast, too capable, etc. Sure its fun to rev it to 9k, but then you get to look around to see if any cops are around to witness your litany of traffic violations.
6 gt3, while I've never driven one, is likely much more fun on the street.
more fun to drive a slower car fast than a fast car slow and all that.
I have both too, and both in white, and both driven mostly at the track. The 6GT3 is much more involving and challenging to drive at the limit. In that sense it is very rewarding, and can catch people with more power and better suspensions. On the other hand, it is hard to beat the pop of the PDK when you are trying to catch someone, and the scream of 9k. But honestly, the sound of either one is a thrill at redline. I have to say that the 4WS makes some of the turns much faster than what I can manage in the 6GT3. I confess that I don't like to outdrive people in my 6Gt3 and have them pull away on the straights, never to be seen again...
The centerlocks are a PITA, but there are a few ways around that. The 6 is a snap to change wheels, oil, or almost everything else. The parts are much cheaper, as is the maintenance. I use Pirelli take offs on the 6, which are MUCH better and MUCH cheaper than Hoosiers.
The cars are more similar than they are different. I love them both, and so far, I'm lucky enough to keep both. Just wish tracks were open...

I dont think the 996 gt3 is a lot of fun on the street. Perhaps a stock one could be. Mine is modded and is nervous, loud, stiff and did i mention loud?

+1. Not so fun on the street. Actually, kind of abrasive and assaulting.

Again, depends on the use I guess. I would agree that "not fun on the street" would probably be accurate if one were looking for a daily. But if its just a fun "weekend" car, isn't raw, loud, and harsh part of the appeal? I find my 6-3 super fun on the street (but I'm not driving it close to every day!). The novelty of the "race car for the street" thing does not wear off fast if you don't get it out that often.
