Trying to decide between these models and years. Limited cash to about 25K. I want to get the biggest bang for the buck. Never owned a Porsche. I can get newer technology and less miles with a Boxster S. Is the driving experience that much better with the older 911?

Just make sure you set aside 3-5k for maintenance items previous owners neglected or that will give you piece of mind for the next period.
If you are considering the Boxster, go for it. It is a great car. If you like 911, you go for 911. You are spending money anyway, better make it work for you!

Go drive examples of both and make up your mind which flavor of Porsche you want.
Then buy the newest/best example you can find and afford.
Rule of thumb with a used car is to have set aside 10% of the car's purchase price for "just in case". In the case of a Porsche I'd advise you to bump that 10% to 20%.
Happy shopping!

I had an 05 987 boxster and now have a 996 and a 958 TT. I agree with the other posts and they are all different cars. The boxster, being mid engine was easier to drive near the limit and the interior was nicer given the refresh. The 996 is also a cab and the interior is older but the car has a very different driving personality. Have not had it near the limits yet but I can say it is an adjustment to drive *** heavy.
imo if the interior is important go newer boxster. I bought the 996 for a weekend car to pair with the big twin turbo grocery getter and I don't regret it. with all of them, repairs are not cheap but if your a garage mechanic you should be ok.
