Ran across this on eBay. It's an 03 Coupe with 40k. It was in a minor accident and they threw a replacement bumper on it. It's a salvage title. I was thinking someone here might be in the market for a track car and as long as the damage was minor it might make a good base.

The seller is a well known rebuilder of M96 engines. Fairly or unfairly, he has been involved in a number of (*ahem*) heated Rennlist exchanges over the past few years.

I don't know the man, and have neither experience with his work nor opinion regarding same. But he does seem to be quite the lightning rod for spirited discussion.

It just dawn on me when I was looking at this car that I think the rear of a 996 is better looking than a 997. If this car was in a light accident, why is there a salvage title? Shouldn't this be a major accident?

for it to have a salvaged license it must have been in much more than a miner accident. The track is the last place a salvaged car should be going.

I disagree.... one needs to know the details of the salvage title.

to me a salvaged title says the cost of repair is worth more than the cost of the car. Surely that is no miner accident on a 2003 with only 40,000 miles on the clock. That's more like a major accident.

+1 ... auction listing said it was salvaged due to front end body damage. That's possible, as the cost of a new front clip could easily exceed the threshold to total a car. OTOH, there could be all sorts of trouble lurking. Without a lot of detail and a good inspection, there's simply no way to know.

It could also have been a theft vehicle, that will get a salvage title. You can run a free vin search in the federal database for theft cars.

That's the right idea, but the values are off a bit. A salvage decision is based on a sliding scale of repair cost to FMV. Starts around 50% and goes up to 75% or so.

Frex; if this car were worth $22,000 FMV, then to trigger a salvage decision the repair cost would need to be between $11,000 and $16,000 depending on the sale value and salvage value of the vehicle. The adjuster would look at it, total up about $12k in costs and say 'its a salvage'. I would not pay more than $12-13k for this example. A similar car without salvage title and significant damage can be had for $18-22k.

Splitting Atoms

The description states, in so many words, that they put a used bumper on the front, but the underside damage has not been repaired. Seems like a high price for an example with a salvage title that has not been repaired. As far as using it as a track car, I would be leery that the front suspension is out of line due to the body damage. It could require a lot of work to get it right.
