Default Retro-fit cupholder into 996

Hello, I'm in a pickle and hoping you kind guys won't mind helping me out...

My wife has a 2000 996 and she has said for the last two years how much she wants the Porsche cup holder. It's her birthday on Tuesday, so I'm hoping I'm going to complete this by then!

So far this escapade has been quite a rough ride; with the price of a new one, then the common faults of them sticking, onto the price of used ones, to my landing a not too sticky one for £40.

Today is the day I thought great she's at work, I'm going to fit it and she won't even notice... Then I found out, the vents seem to be different... Back to eBay then, found some vents and rang them for advise: Apparently, I need the face-lift parts: at least the horseshoe (in Savannah), the backing and the vents. The guy I spoke with wasn't 100% on the smaller parts I would need, hence coming to you guys.

It has Sat-nav.

A 2000 over there could be a 2001 which is still a mk1 model. If you get mk1 cup holder that takes up a whole din slot, that should be all that you need, unless you have a Nav system possibly. Many have done this mod without any issues.

Pics of your car and center console would help us in verifying it.

One for each side - though you can find them a lot cheaper if you look

+1 on the Ultimate. My dashboard had a small piece break a while back. It is closed and will remain so.

I know that the Ultimate Cupholders are the crowd favorite around here but I like the Porsche version better. It does depend on what she is going to be using it for. Is she an cappuccino drinker (small cups work in the Porsche version - I would not use it for larger drinks) or more of a Big Gulp type?

Might be able to check out our cup holders here (has a retro fit cupholder kit as well).

We all know a cup holder has no place in a true performance car. The Germans never took cup holders seriously (i.e. in the 964 or 993) believing that no self respecting driver would ever use one. Only long term market information convinced them that they should put one in the 911.
In fact, this was true of all the German manufacturers. I think they all were "mocking" us here in the U.S. by designing cup holders that could only have been thought up by a German.

And that can't fit a can of soda, or at least couldn't fit the one I tried to put in there.

I always found this interesting considering they installed an ashtray and lighter.

Not sure if this one is still available or not:

I actually have it installed but it is only good for large cups (pun intended). Nice and simple design.

I may give them a call tomorrow to find out.

I have the factory cupholder below the vents, which I've never used. (Yet for some reason I went through the trouble to fix it) I also have an Ultimate Cupholder, and I'm not really a fan of that either.

Here is a picture of my interior with it installed. As I mentioned, it is very cupsize specific. If the cup is too big, it wont go through the hole. Too small and it will fall all the way through. I thought about putting some kind of rubber in the center to help hold different sizes of cups.

It is VERY easy to install. It just slides in place.

As you can see I have three cupholders. The Porsche pair up top and the one off to the right.
