Wow, dodged a bullet. Only as strong as the weakest link indeed. Makes me want to drop my sump periodically. What made you decide you want to drop the sump or do you do this at certain intervals?

Edit: Lol...asked the same question at the same time.

I figured it's been 10k miles so it's a good time to check the sump. Sump plate removal and re-seal is really easy btw.

No collateral damage since the clip was caught in the oil pick up mesh. Didn't even get to the oil pump.

You have done this before so know better than I do but I would avoid splitting the case again at all cost and replace with a 1-piece clip. I have run chains with the 1-piece clip starting with the chain drive on my go kart at age 11 and never had one come adrift.

Lucky find. I wonder how many miles you've covered since that C clip strayed. Might be thousands or tenths.

Has JR ever shared his upgrade for this issue?

That's one option for sure. Don't even know if thr one-piece clip is available for these chains.

Your guess is as good as mine.

I haven't seen any. Perhaps he could come up with "Faultless clips"

I'll likely drop the engine and inspect the chains first before making decisions. Have to drop the engine whichever options I pick anyway.

Damn, sorry to hear that Ahsai. At least you caught it early. I've used the one piece style master link clips for years on motorcycle drive chains. Only ever had one come off and it was a dirtbike that got dragged across rocks backwards...long story. For serious high power operations we used a riveted link.

I have a few options to consider:
- Genuine one-piece chain
- OEM (IWIS) one-piece chain
- Use a one-piece E-clip that covers both pins as opposed to two individual c-clips like I have now. However, not sure if a single E-clip is necessarily safer

If I go with one-piece chains, I'll need to split the case.
yup, same failure in my 4.0.

found the clip in my sump.

dropped engine, fixed the chain and sold the car.

Officially done with porsche 996's.

Good luck Ashai! You are a much more patient man than I am.

I get it! That was major reason for me moving on. Too much time spent wrenching and not enough at the track. I missed an entire season again because of this engine.

When you find out where the link without the clip is, have a really close look at the groove that the clip was in. I have a feeling the groove is worn.

For me, it's more like not enough spare time for wrenching in general. This rebuilt 996 normally needs nothing other than oil change.

Will do.
