Yeah, AWDGuy also suffered the same if you remember.

I have a few options to consider:
- Genuine one-piece chain
- OEM (IWIS) one-piece chain
- Use a one-piece E-clip that covers both pins as opposed to two individual c-clips like I have now. However, not sure if a single E-clip is necessarily safer

If I go with one-piece chains, I'll need to split the case.

Oh man... Good luck regardless of what you decide to do. Just a silly question: Why didn't you go with the one piece chains when you were originally building the engine?

These chains are supposed to be stronger and better than the OE ones. The stock timing chain is one of the failure modes often mentioned by Jake.

But those lame-O little c-clips Ugh... that's scary stuff. If that chain lets go you're fooked!

I know. Every fiber in my body felt the same...At least now we know the engine still runs after losing one of the c-clips

BTW, here's another design used by 911? https://sierramadrecollection.com/Ti...92-p20466.html

Not sure if it's safer though as if you loose this clip, the chain is likely to come apart.

This is what you would normally see in a bicycle chain. As long as you get the opening of the clip in the trailing edge, you are good to go. With the one with the two c clips, the clip could rotate around on the shaft. Wow, that is a real bummer. I would replace the clip vs. splitting the case. Best of luck!

Yeah, could have been MUCH worse...

Now the easiest way is to split the cam covers and reinstall new one-piece clips on both chains.

I have a 152 h.p. Harley that would annihilate the belt drive, I converted to a chain drive and had to use swaged master link, maybe there are swag able master links out there. quick release would not work regardless of install direction.

I'm very tempted to go back to the stock (or IWIS non master link) chains.

Bad news: I dropped the oil pan the other day and found one of the c-clips of the master-linked timing chain in the oil pick up tube metal mesh. I plan to drop the engine to address that soon.

Damn, that is one lucky catch. Do you regularly drop the pan for inspections? Best of luck to you in getting the engine sorted out and I hope there is no collateral damage from floating parts.
