Default In need of HELP!!!!

Ok Here is a little history, I have a 2004 911 (996) 40th AE has the 3.6 X51 engine and with 111k miles, The car has performed perfect since I bought it 5 months ago, On my way home yesterday as I was taking off 1st gear was fine went to 2nd fine then when I went to 3rd ...... nothing the stick shift was in the 3rd position and nothing it felt like it was in neutral I went 4th and same thing so i went back to 2nd and it engaged and i was able to pull in somewhere. I pulled over turned the car off and restart it the car ( NO CODES) she ran perfect for about 15 miles, I got home and parked it. This morning when I went to warm up the car it started to make a winning and clanking ( The wimming was constantly, the knocking noise was repeatedly but like every 5 seconds there was a clanking noise) The noise was coming from the engine bay, I shut the car off and here I am looking for suggestions.

Thank you in advance.

I'm with Frisbee on this one. Go underneath and check if the two cables for any play and if are attached. If you don't see anything there then you will need to look at the shifter in the car.

Sounds like it could be the cables. When I had my trans out I didn't put the cables back on all the way (had to push harder than expected for one of them. ). When I checked it later, due diligence after the trans R&R, I found one about to fall off. Popped it back on and all good

I agree with checking the cables. However, you also said when running the engine to warm it up it is making a whining/clanking sound. If it continues to make that noise I would get it to a shop pronto and have it checked out. Could be a clutch assembly problem (plate, throw-out bearing, dual mass flywheel, fork.) Running it for any length of time could lead to some serious problems.

The whining noise sounds like an alternator pulley as far as the clanking noise it was not constant it was more like if I was hitting a wrench on metal every 5 to 6 seconds.

I had this problem as well. There is a clip that holds the shifter cables by the transmission. The clip was broken and the cables had enough play in them to not shift correctly. You can do a search on rennlist. There are posts for people who have corrected this problem by using wire ties to secure the cables.

Do a search on rennlist for "question on shift cable rear retaining clip". This was a post that talked about this issue and showed pictures. I'm sorry, I don't know how to post the link here in the reply. This post was started in like July 2006.

If you get the car up on ramps, get under it, and have someone else move the shifter, you'll immediately see what's going on. A medium (8") zip tie should do the trick.

Here's the post Danielcooper was referencing:

I came across this pic from the "Engine Removal" diy on Pelican when I was dropping my motor earlier this year. Look close for the zip tie.
