I'd probably spend a few grand on new paint though...
That looks like Vesuvio Metallic paint; I definitely wouldn't repaint that car. Have you ever seen a 996 in that color? It's actually pretty stunning. What I really like is that this car doesn't have the almost-obligatory beat-to-hell gray interior. And, according to the ad, it's full leather.
That car shouldn't last long at that price. If everything checks out, it's well under the usual $20k it takes to buy and sort out one of these cars.
$10,000 asking price for a black on black, 6 speed, coupe. Running, driving car owned by the same private individual for several years. This one belongs to a buddy of mine who is a fellow board member for the Kansas City Automove Museum. Matt is a car guy - he has three 996s plus a bunch of other cool old cars. The engine runs fine, but has a tick in it. I've heard it - it's not horrible, doesn't sound like impending doom. But Matt's very realistic about what the car is worth with the mileage and the IMSB hysteria. It's a good deal if you understand what the car is and what it isn't.
The black on black 996 from Kansas City seems like it has a "ticking" time bomb and the price reflects this. While the price is attractive, I wouldn't touch it.

Interesting that he doesn't mention the 'tick' in the ad. hmmm.
You might not notice it if he didn't point it out - I didn't. Once he pointed it out, I'm like, "oh, yeah, I hear what you're talking about." I wouldn't be surprised if that engine ran fine for another 50,000+ miles.
Again, we're talking about a $10,000 asking price here folks. If the engine does blow, sell the carcass for $6,000 and you're out $4,000. Or, if it doesn't blow, drive it for 2 or 3 years and sell it easy for what you paid for it.
Needs clutch and dying motor, 200k on the chassis. Willing to trade for a good M96 motor....LOL.
$5k car.
Well, I missed the part about the clutch. I didn't see it in the ad - last time I rode in it was about a year ago, so my bad. The motor he's referencing a trade for is for one of his other 996s that had an IMSB failure.
Bottom line, it's a cheap car. People in this forum have spent more repairing a transmission than what he's looking to get out of it. Jeez, you'd think he was trying to get top dollar out of it. Like anything, do your homework when you buy. I can guarantee you that it's not more than $10k overpriced.

KC, for this car $10k is a top dollar. He is your buddy, so I can see why you would be sticking up for the deal.
Car IS a roller that needs clutch and has 200k on the chassis. This is a $5k car.

I really don't see all the reason for the negativity. This car is priced appropriately and it is a perfect pick up for a guy that wants a hobby car and has mechanical ability. Fix the clutch, replace IMS and RMS, probably AoS too and check other things, and then you have a car you could track without crying if it blows up.
Heck if someone wants to buy my 944 for 5k right now, I'd have to strongly consider this 996 to pick up as a track toy. I could do the needed work install an X50 oil baffle and go beat the holy heck out of this car and not cry when or if it blows up either. This car is almost ideal in many ways. If its still sitting around in December when I get my big annual bonus, I will offer $8500 and profit!
