Default Squeaky windows

Hi
I Recently brought a 2004 C4S cab and the windows squeak when you put them up and down or when you drop the roof. It seems to be coming from the window seals and not the mechanism. I wondered if anyone has had this problem and what they did to fix it.
Many thanks

I have the same issue Roo. I've tried Gummi Pflege Stift as well as a Dry Lubricant and I still have the problem. Lots of squeaks. If anyone has a solution I'd love to hear it.

Buy a coupe
I have heard of people using alcohol free lotion on the rubber and it has worked.

Have this with my Boxster something fierce. Tech said it comes from the "seal" at the window along the door. This seal -- consisting of short stiff fibers -- dried out over time.

The tech adviced pushing the window away from this and rubbing some soap with lanolin on the fibers. Don't over do it.

I have not tried this because I just don't think about it when I can do it and when I can do it I just don't think about it.

On a related note, be sure the glass is clean inside and out. Be sure where the glass contacts the rubber weathering stripping the glass is clean. The glass can develop a sort of film where it contact the rubber which can affect the glass's smooth quiet movement where it touches the rubber.

Be sure the rubber is clean too. I just a clean soft rag dipped in very hot water then rung out to wipe all the rubber weather stripping clean once in awhile. For soft tops do not forget the weather seal that runs the width of the leading edge of the top and that seals against the top of the windshield frame.

I had similar issue on passenger side window and sometimes would even curl rubber going down. I used NuFinish on both windows rubber strip and problem solved.

I use dry silicon spray lubricant on the inside of the seals (where the seals contact the glass). This takes care of the squeak as well as the issue of the glass grabbing the rubber and flipping the seal down - and it doesn't leave residue on the glass like vinyl/rubber dressings will.

Note that some of the aerosol propellants can cause coloration issues when applied to some plastics or polyurethanes, so use a can that has a straw or other precision applicator. For best results, apply when the window is rolled down - use your finger or a spudger to separate the inside and outside seals and apply the silicon in the middle. If you apply the stuff with the glass up and inadvertently shoot supercooled propellant onto the window glass, you may suddenly have a bigger issue than squeaks.

Happened to think about this when in the Boxster yesterday. I checked and with the window down the edge with the fibers is exposed so no need to push the glass in to make room.

Still didn't have anything with me to treat the seal and its line of fibers. But the squeak is not nearly so bad. Seems milder temperatures and a bit of humidity have quieted things down.

But one of these days I'll get around to this...

I had a look, I can see what you mean. Flat out with work so not had much time to sort out. This weekend I will try it out,

Hi I tried some dry silicone spray, it seems to have stopped the worst of it but the noise is still there. To be honest the temperature has dropped in the UK and it has been rainy so the roof has been up. not sure if the temperature effects the problems.

Me too. New hot project at work and then there family responsibilities.

Recently the window squeal has diminished somewhat, sometimes almost gone entirely, but I do not know why.

Temperature has been up and down so that can't be it. Humidity likewise can be quite low or rather high. I can't spot a pattern.

And I managed to find the time early one Saturday washed the car which means the outside glass surfaces got cleaned.

Then I took a clean rag wet with hot water and wrung out and used it to wipe down the inside surfaces of all the glass windows and then buffed them dry with another dry clean rag.

mine started this recently as well, on both windows. terrible when it's hot out, then seems to almost go away when it gets cooler.

I'm no detailing expert, but I do know they decontaminate windows just like clearcoat. Could be summer contaminants (summer gas?) causing this, just a wild first guess. I'm as skeptical as anybody else, but sentences like this one (from a product description) are starting to make sense to me: "Glass Polish also removes embedded dirt, adhesive residue, wax, grease, oil and smog film, paint and putty residues without streaks or glare."

That said, I'm going to try some of the solid suggestions posted earlier in this thread.
