996 Stereo Upgrades in Here

Does the 996 not get the Porsche Classic Plus Infotainment system - which seemed bigger ?

Newbie
After countless thread reading on audio upgrades for my 996 cab, I decided to think outside the box and man did it pay off. So I wanted to share. First I bought the aux line upgrade from Becker in NJ for $99, and while not necessary it did make a great improvement to audio quality with my factory speakers, it still wasn't the audio quality that we wanted. The price to make our car sound the way we wanted, and too also keep it relatively stock just wasn't adding up. But then we thought, what if we just bought an awesome bluetooth speaker. The JBL boombox is a little pricey at $500, but compared to the budget of a complete custom audio job, it's a bargain and the sounds it AMAZING. Plus it isn't just stuck in my car, we can use it every where. Just my quick two cents!

Pioneer W4660NEX
Just installed a Pioneer W4660NEX With wireless CarPlay in my ‘99 C2 w/ the amp & DSP. It probably took about 10 hours over two nights but overall it went well. I got the head unit from Best Buy. I got the Metra mounting kit & wiring harness, radio removal keys and USB connector from Amazon. Crutchfield was sold out of the stereo & I didn’t want to wait. Some notes:

- The radio keys wouldn’t go in all the way and lock. I had to take the HVAC unit out first and help the radio along
- Yup, routing the HVAC wires was a pain in the butt for me. I could have done a better job routing them since they barely made it to the edge of the faceplate but it was enough
- I removed the cig lighter and installed a USB port. It took me a while to figure out how to get that out. I also had to cut out the sleeve around it at the back so I could screw the port in
- I also decided to put the mic in the stock location on the left of the dashboard. I had to take the instrument cluster completely off to route the wire. I put a towel and rag down to keep the cluster from marring the dash when I was wrangling it but I wasn’t careful enough. I ended up with a couple small divots by the ignition Hopefully they’ll go away with some time and heat. The mic sounds fine in that location. No worse than my Subaru with the mic by the mirror (just put the same system in that car too)
- Based on a suggestion from Reddit, I mounted the GPS antenna under the plastic piece by the windshield wipers and ran it through a rubber grommet to the firewall. It took me like half an hour to get that #!%&@ grommet back in!
- Like a lot of others, the protrusion on the bottom of the Metra kit was too big to fit in the dash opening. I was able to shave the bottom 1/8” off of it and keep the screw in. That was enough
- The only problem I’m having is that Siri, voicemail, basically any iPhone generated output sounds tinny. However, music from the iPhone sounds fine

Can someone verify my build list for my 2001 (non-bose), please? The only thing I'm not sure about needing is the 3.5mm to 3RCA. I got this after looking at some posts
Metra 70-1784 Radio Wiring Harness
USB 3.0 flush
Metra 70-1787 Radio Wiring Harness
Metra Electronics 40-VW10 Factory Antenna to Aftermarket Radio Adapter
3.5mm Male Straight to 3RCA Female
Metra 999605B DIN/DDIN In-Dash Kit
And I will be picking up a random 7" at a local store. It looks like the in-dash kit may need a little shaving to make it work.

Metra 70-1784 Radio Wiring Harness - Yup
USB 3.0 flush - Get your stereo first. They can have different connectors. The one I bought has USB-C on the back
Metra 70-1787 Radio Wiring Harness - You should only need the 1787
Metra Electronics 40-VW10 Factory Antenna to Aftermarket Radio Adapter - I got a 40VW12
3.5mm Male Straight to 3RCA Female - Not sure what this is for?
Metra 999605B DIN/DDIN In-Dash Kit - Yup

Also, don't forget to buy radio removal keys like these: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07WWDVKY2...roduct_details
and yes I bought those actually. Everything came in today, just in time for the weekend. Now time to buy the double din at Best Buy or a local audio shop.
edit: thank you for the input!

Maybe. Some HUs have a mini HDMI output so it depends on what stereo you get. Not sure about RCA to HDMI. I always think of those as analog type cables where HDMI is digital. But there's no reason why you couldn't put a digital signal through them.

Got it all hooked up and working though. What an interesting new project.
Where did you get that crest? Looks great! Or is it a sticker?

I enjoyed the car very much and I hope you are enjoying it too. Here's a a shot of the car that I took in the fall of 2009 right after installing the winter wheels and tires for the season.
