996 Stereo Upgrades in Here
#76
Finished my stereo install today. Wanted to post some notes and maybe some pics. Car is a 2002 with Bose and CD Changer.
Couldnt find much info but I didnt find another post referencing using two different wiring harnesses. Metra 70-1787 and 70-1784. It required using the black harness from the 1784 and the red harness from the 1787. No RCAs were used on the red harness, in fact I cut them off to keep it a bit cleaner. The only wire used in the red harness was the amp turn on (blue-white) wire.
I chose Pioneer AVH-211EX as a budget double DIN. The metra install kit instructions were really terrible and not much help at all. Had to remove the entire trim ring around the stereo and switch panel from the upper portion. This allowed removal of the radio mount behind it. Trimmed off the appropriate pieces but then realized there was a double din looking metal part behind it that had to be removed. Used the microbypass to avoid taking apart the center console for the parking brake switch. Install was reverse of removal. The metra kit does not quite match the factory black but for the price it is hard to beat.
So much better than the factory headunit and looks much better. Now on to the speakers. Had a set of JBL GTO 528 and alpine s-410 to install. Ill try and post pics when I get them off my phone of what it looks like, the wire harness I made and where the amp turn on goes in the red plug.

I ran a cheap aftermarket unit and it was terrible. Pulled it out and re-installed the CDR-220. The sound I get from this POS is terrible. It doesn't do anything well. Next up- I want to remove the entire Bode system and go direct with a head unit and run the speaker wire myself.
Is the Bose system tied into anything else? If I remove the amp in the frump, the speakers and the CDR 220 am I going to run into something tied into the security system? Is gutting the old system a feasible way to go?

I upgraded my entire system a few years ago. Here are the highlights:
- Kenwood DNX-6960 double-DIN head unit
- Focal four channel amp mounted in the frunk where the CD-changer used to reside. Custom mount built and new custom carpet installed in cargo area.
- Focal speakers installed in factory locations, using factory speaker grills. Custom mounts built for door mounted sub-woofers.
- Custom sub-woofer box fabricated and installed in Bose factory sub location. Covered with new carpet.
- Antennae for Sirius/XM and GPS installed on the front bumper, hidden underneath the front bumper cover.
- Custom iPhone mount built into dash underneath head unit
- Mic located in factory location
Pros:
- Outstanding sound quality
- Modern navigation system
- Sirius/XM, Pandora and iPod connectivity
- Good appearance, matching lighting, etc.
Cons:
- Expensive installation
- Limited functionality of Bluetooth phone connection due to noise levels in the cabin while driving
- Poor AM radio reception (I occasionally listen to talk radio)
Overall, I'm very pleased with it.

Does anyone have the part # for this fuel pump assembly bulkhead lid? It's much deeper than the one that came with my 996tt and is exactly what I need for the upgraded fuel system that was installed on my car.
I've searched several PET catalogs and all I can find is 996 504 471 00. This is the part # for the lid I already own (shallow), not the lid I'm looking for (the deeper one).

parts fiche on auto Atlanta site reports part#: 99650447101. A google search of that part number results with images of the cover you’re looking for. Hope that helps.

I think that’s fantastic! I’d love to hear how it’s doing! Feel free to reach out any time. I can give you plenty of information on the maintenance and modifications during the time that I owned it.

My headunit evolutions
Navi unit -> Becker 7992 (PCM not working) -> PCRN + full operating PCM
Now there are at the same time: radio, cassette, CD-changer, second radio, bluetooth (audio and telephone), microSD, line-IN, navi

when I looked into it for ya, I was using the parts fische for the TT as they are all AWD. Under that spec, i only saw one part# available. Perhaps you’re looking under the standard (non-turbo 996) and there are two: one for the Carrera and one for the Carerra 4 and 4s? Regardless, I believe the part # I referenced should fix you up, but I’ve never held that part in my hand, so I couldn’t be 100%. Let me know if you’re still in doubt and I can pull mine off my C4s to confirm the number stamped on it.

Is your car a 996.2? I didn't think the Classic radio worked in our cars, but maybe that's just the non-MOST equipped ones?
