I figure I'd start a post and mods feel free to make this a sticky if it makes sense to do so.

With more and more getting oil samples done lately(companies like Blackstone must be reaping the rewards), I'd like to create this post in hopefully comprehensively have one point where we can see everyone's oil sample(s).

Please post here and any additional comments you may have to YOUR car/driving conditions/habits.

This report was with Mobile 0w40. Those 3k+ miles were on hard street miles on a ~115k motor. I'll start this one:

2003 C4 Cab. This was my last one with Mobil 1. I now Run DT40, I just changed the oil yesterday but forgot to grab a sample for analysis, so in 6 months I will have and analysis with DT40, and should not have any contamination of Mobil 1 or the Break In oil I used to flush the motor since this will be the second change with DT40 running through it..

More data all on my 2003 C2 Cab, alas no turbo, the 2013 report is on Motul XS 5-40 changed at low miles while doing IMSB. The others are Mobil 0-40.

The Mileage on the oil is actually about 9,000 miles in about 3 years. I gave them the wrong info when sending in the sample. It is from a 2003 C2 cab that has only ever had Mobil-1 0w40 oil. Previous oil changes were performed at about 5K mile intervals.

What is TBN and TAN? (and why don't they appear on my report?)

You have to pay extra at Blackstone for the TBN (total base number). My understanding is that TBN shows the protective properties left in your oil (over 1 is good), and TAN is total acidic number. I do. A bunch of numbers.

On a serious note, what I'm hoping is enough samples collected to see if there are any consistencies or characteristecs on different oils given a healthy motor. I'm also hoping this can raise some red alerts if someone's sample is way off the mark prompting them to investigate further rather than not doing anything about it.

At this point it's merely just a database of samples and nothing more. I'm hoping we could maybe get some correlation and trend data if we get enough samples but I'm not holding my breath.

I think the short answer for those non-mechanics (like me) would be to call someone like you if the metal wear numbers are above averages reported by Blackstone. Also, for those who desire to extend their oil change intervals -- the TBN will tell you over time whether you can go longer. Notwithstanding, I like to take your advice and change oil frequently to inspect the filter for little metallic particles. None yet, and soon possibly an IMS Guardian or LN bearing since my CPO is about to expire.

The problem with Blackstone is they have no interface with these engines and cannot connect the dots between their values and actual wear.

BTW I had the engine idling for about 5 mins before taking the oil sample - I know tsk tsk....
