Default One more clutch thread

I have a 2003 Carrera 4 with about 60K miles. In the last 2 weeks, the clutch has started to stick about halfway up when released. I can nudge it up the rest of the way with my toe, but it makes a most unsatisfying 'clunk' sound. The clutch is not rev-slipping at all, but it is a little heavy (or so I'm told (relatively new owner)). I got under there and zapped the linkages with some white lithium grease in the high hopes it was just a sticking issue.

Took it to an indy last week who did a flush of the fluid but that didn't solve the symptom. The indy says I need a new clutch and, if I'm doing that, I may as well replace the intermediate bearing. I agree that if the clutch needs replacing, the IMS bearing will be done concurrently.

Any thoughts and comments appreciated wrt - do I need a new clutch or could it be the cable and helper spring.

Sounds like it could be a broken pedal assist mechanism. Is the unsettling "clunk" sound coming from the back of the car or from somewhere near the pedal?

Darrick

Its coming from the pedal assembly - ie. under the dash/ in the footwell.

BTW - had a PPI done at local P dealer. Clutch reported as okay.

Read some of this thread. The helper spring is #9 in the pic in the first couple of posts.

Yup, my money is on it being a broken assist spring. It's easy to remove it yourself, but requires a bit of contortion under the dash to reach everything.

Remove the assembly and see if that fixes the problem. The pedal will be a lot stiffer with it out and you won't be able to use your cruise control, but the car is very drivable with it out (some will argue it's MORE drivable with it out).

I removed mine awhile back and found it a bit too stiff for driving in traffic, so I replaced the spring with one about half as strong as the OEM one. Much better clutch feel and it gets rid of that "two step" feeling of the factory clutch.

It may very well be time for many other clutch parts as well. I just did this complete job on mine on the same model car as yours (Im assuming yours is a C4S not a C4).

Thanks, Capt O. I'll pull it out tonight and see what happens.

Contortion time.
