I did this mod several years ago. Used a footwell light switch for toggling through the function and resetting the counters. I also modified the switch so that the light on it goes on when the rear spoiler raises.

I have had a four stalk switch sitting in storage for several years, maybe this summer I will get around to installing it.

Doug, I give you procrastinator of the decade award for this post. I've read ALL the threads on the OBC hack to try and understand it, and I noticed a theme...

Enjoy your award!

P.S. Do you want to sell me your parts?

I think I read that the seat heater switch is a different type.

Here's one description I found:Link

I used the Targa switch, which kind of looks like a garage.

Hey Doug,
I'm hoping to add my On-board-computer control button(s) this weekend. Your post above intrigues me. How did you wire the footwell switch so that the LED indicator light goes on when the rear spoiler raises? Is there a 12VDC signal or closed contact signal somewhere that indicates the spoiler is up?

Is there a DIY somewhere? Thanks.

frisbee,

While you are in there......wouldn't you want to add the "spoiler is going up or down indicator mod?"

http://www.ebay.com/itm/SPOILER-CONT...-/261201348981

I will be doing the OBC, garage door opener and the spoiler mods all at once.....have all the parts, but trying to find the time......

regards

Funny you should mention that. I ordered a custom blank button for my OBC hack from Stefan, the ebay seller of the "spoiler indicator" mod. I'm not sure if I need/want the spoiler indicator. I was hoping to find a DIY to the spoiler indicator hack, but the old links to it are all broken. Anyone know where to find information on doing the wiring yourself? (versus buying the electronics). I like the fun of the DIY.

Haven't received my new switch yet, but expect it soon. I'll post back once it's done in a few weeks.

Nice.....BTW, when I purchased the spoiler indicator....I received 2 of them.....I have the instructions on where to hook up for the indicator (spoiler going up/down).......I expect to do all mods at once, when I find time to do it....I do not wanna have to remove the dash twice....for extra space I even bought the "bat wing" in case I need more buttons.....LOL

If you have a '01+, you already have that functionality.

However, I still find it interesting that this was hidden on the '99-'00.
OBC came standard on 2nd generation 996s (2002 on). I did the OBC with stalk on my car back in 2002. It's about a 3-hour job and involves taking apart the top of the instrument panel and steering wheel. Not for the faint of heart.

Are you saying you have an '01 that didn't come with the stalk?

I'm confused at what you're trying to say.

I have an '01 996 and it has the stalk... but it is possible that the previous owner installed it.

For the record it's an '01 turbo

1999 and 2000 models had a standalone option for the OBC for around $300. In 2001, they made OBC available only as part of a $2000 package. I didn't order my car with that package, so I retrofitted the OBC with the stalk. On 2nd generation models, starting in 2002, the instrument panel was slightly reconfigured and they all came with the OBC and stalk.

If you have a 1999-2001 model and all you want is outside temp reading, you can just have it activated using the OBDII tool.
