Default Replacement motor IMS bearing type

Hi all,

I recently purchased a 1999 996. The original engine was replaced in 2008 with a new engine from Porsche due to catastrophic failure in the original engine. The new engine has about 60k miles on it and it has a "Machining date" (at least that's what Google translate says it is) of September 18, 2007. Which IMSB do you think this engine has? It seems that it was manufactured after the new engines started getting the updated bearings, but it also has the throttle cable instead of drive-by-wire so I'm not sure what to think.

If it helps, the SN is M96.01AT66X67216

With a build date in 2007 I would be fairly confident it has the larger, non-serviceable bearing. Best practice is to remove the grease seal off the existing bearing to allow the engine oil to better lubricate it as outlined here:

Anyone know the cost...? I'm looking at a 2005 911 Carrera (Tip) with less than 35,000 miles. Doesn't appear to have IMS updated.
What's the approx cost, in total, to get it updated with the "solution"?
It has a build date of 4-4-2004 - so I'm assuming it using the old stuff from 996 models.

Hi all, I just picked up my first 996. It's a 1999 with a 1998 build date, so it should have the dual row bearing. It currently has 116k miles. I'm the fourth owner, and it was serviced by a Porsche dealership for the first 15 years of it's life. At 77k miles, the clutch was replaced by the dealership, but no IMS.

I know this is really my call, but given that it's a 1999, dual row, seems well driven and well taken care of, I'm having a hard time deciding. Any thoughts?

I'd recommend waiting 20k miles, then do the clutch and IMS bearing at the same time

That's kind of what I was thinking. Clutch feels really good right now though, so not sure it will need replacing in 20k.

That could certainly be the situation, but you'll also probably have a better idea of how the car is performing and you can decide from there. I've pulled two 20 year old double row bearings out (with lower mileage) and they were both fine, but I was doing the clutches anyways.

I’m brand new to the 996. Although I’ve been wrenching on and driving 928’s for 10 years. Just shook on a deal to buy a 2000 996 Tip / Cab with very low miles from the son of the original owner. Pretty much a one owner car and in EXCELLENT condition. Drives, accelerates, handles & stops like a new car.

My concern is the IMSB has not been replaced & the ill-informed owner has not changed the oil in 8 years. It has 7K miles on the Mobil 1 full synthetic so I’m HOPEFUL he didn’t screw up the IMSB thinking synthetic oil doesn’t have a shelf life. Ugh!!!!

Of course, I’m sending the oil off to Blackstone for analysis prior to sealing the deal. Already reached out to the only LD solution certified tech in Ohio to replace the IMSB. Approximately $3500 on the automatic… Ouch! Otherwise the car is immaculate and the IMSB replacement was factored into the price.

Anything else I should look for while under the car on a lift? Under the bonnet? Interior? Hidden problems? Etc? Thanks in advance!!

8 years!!! I suggest you start a thread and see what the experts think. 7,000 in 8 years on the same oil can't be good. As for the "while in there" stuff....UAOS (new product invented by @Porschetech3 , RMS, and water pump come to mind. Really think this car needs its own thread. Good Luck.

Thanks but the only certified installer in Indiana, Ohio and Kentucky seems to be out of business.

Is Jeff at Kraftwerks in Marengo, OH no longer doing business out of his shop? He's a certified installer and that's where I had a retrofit done back in 2017.
