Nice car but first of all, I hope you stick around the board. Your comments are worth reading (mostly-grin). Sure brings back memories though, I had a guards red 82 Targa and from that front shot it's tough to tell the difference. You'll love it!

Congratulations. You'll love the car. I have a 2000 996 (which I love) and a well sorted '84 911. I love them both. Be sure your suspension is refreshed - new bushing, etc. - and has the uprated torsion bars and shocks and all of the other mods previously mentioned. Go with the previously mentioned 8 and 9 inch Fuchs alloys (they are very light and very strong - and look "right") and put 225's up front and 245's in back. Take out the entire AC system (also as mentioned), have a good race shop do a high performance alignment and corner balance and you'll be amazed at how the car will come alive.

Congrats Ed. You'll love the air cooled experience. Having owned many of them I know what you are getting into. They are a blast. Not sure I agree with the rip out the AC sentiment. You can make it decent if you are not afraid to spend some money. Probably not a big deal for you in your climate though. Follow the advice on a quality corner balance/alignment. You will be shocked at the difference. Nothing like the fun of driving those old buggers!. I for one love the bottom hinged pedals for heel toe driving. With a little seat time you can go stupid fast in one of these babies. My old sorted '84 Carrera felt way better for high speed assaults on the interstate than my 996, especially if there were crosswinds. They are charming cars and the reason that legions of owners still sing their praises. Enjoy!!!!!!

My 996 was unsteady until I sorted the suspension. Now it's rock solid too.

well my 996 settled down at 80 and went WAY higher w/o ANY floaty or unstable feelings....
this little thing jumps up to 100 real quick. Its a very differant feeling of power, but the smile on the face said "yup, it's a Porsche" - Funny, some guys would have had that happen in reverse......
so an interesting note - the 996 at 29 mph when I pass the radar sign that says "you are going" is spot on 25 mph, while the 911 at 25 (as close as I could judge, its a needle) read 29
anyone ever had this experience? - I really have no intension of having someone tell me what my actual was at 100

The old 911's have always been known for having speedos that indicate about 10% fast. What I mean is that at 60 indicated, you are actually traveling at about 54. At 100 indicated, actual speed is about 90.
In my '84 I almost never use the speedo to judge my speed. When I'm in 5th gear, I use the tach. Each 1000 RPM equals 25 mph true speed. Each little 200 rpm tick equals 5 mph. So, if I'm at 3000 RPM, I'm doing 75 mph. If I'm at 3400 RPM, I'm doing 85. 4000 RPM is 100 mph, 5000 RPM is 125 mph, 6000 RPM is 150, and so on. Works like a charm.

Congrats ED !!! Enjoy it....totally different drive....not as effortless as the 996 but very rewarding. I like the contrast of the olive grey and the guards red!!!!
