I had a 2002 Boxster that did the same thing!

Should be at $129.99 "used"! Bought the manual for my 335i (used) for just $20. But, of course, it's NOT a Porsche . . .

And, of course, I just saved it on AMZN for purchase when I'm not so bothered by the asking price. LOL!

PS: Nuts! Looks like I just missed out on a used Bentley manual (that retails for $145) for just $50 that I save to my buy list on AMZN too.

Oh well . . . they're just on my "want" list. Don't "need them because I don't do any of my own work but would "like to have one of them for reference. Will just have to keep an eye out for one in the future.

I have to do my own work to afford owning a Porsche. So, paying full retail for a brand new one was cheap to me...It's more than paid for its self in the first 6 months of ownership.

I don't do any of my own work anymore (except really easy stuff where you don't get dirty) but I have no problem buying as a reference. Just not in a hurry to do so.

Something "new" I learned about my 996 is that when you turn off the fan in the car, the car will overheat.

Don't know the why's/wherefore's but when I did this yesterday, the temp gauge hit red at 250 but when I drove today w/the fan ON, the temp gauge stayed at/below the next hash mark past 180 which I'm guessing is around 210. Who knew?

Something is wrong with your cooling system. The radiator fans come on regardless of the HVAC system fan, except when you have the AC on then the fans come on initially at low speed. Are both of your radiator fans working? You can check them by turning on the AC, then both fans should come on at low speed. 250 is maxed out and something is wrong. Your average temp should be around the 0 in the 180 as shown on the temp gauge. Have you checked your coolant level?

Coolant level is spot on. Radiator fans are working w/AC; don't normally use AC because I always drive w/the top down.

All I know is that when I turned the HVAC fan off in the car, the car overheated. When I turned it back on, everything was fine. Water temp stayed between 180 and the next hash mark (210?) but didn't go all the way to 250 and RED when I left the fan off.

So, unless it goes back into the RED w/the fan ON, I'm not going to worry about it (anymore).

”Bird Box” maintenance. I love it.

Not sure what that means but if it means anything like -- "If it aint' broke, don't fix it." -- then I'm all good w/it.

That's almost like my bore-scoring denial: "when I turn off the radio, I hear a ticking noise from the engine. When I turn it back on, everything is fine." - except the HVAC and the cooling system are related, and the car should NOT overheat whether the HVAC is on or not. Something is wrong with your cooling system, very likely the fans (which come on when you turn on the HVAC, coincidentally)

Here are some things I learned in the past couple of days. The 19" lobster claw wheels with tires weigh very little more than the oem 17" c4 straight spoke wheels with snow tires. 17" Dyno rims fit a c4 perfectly and weigh substantially less than the oem straight spoke rims,, with the same snow tires. 19x11 lobster claw wheels are common, and the 19x9.5 are more scarce. By the way, they fit just fine, no rubbing on a 99 c4 with some thin spacers. The ride with 19" vs 17" doesn't seem to be a lot different. While shopping for wheels, I learned that there are aftermarket versions of MANY oem Porsche rims. Got to be careful when shopping.

That is true..Pretty simple fix.
