Default Rotor hats all rusted 5 months after installation?

Hi folks,

Have a 2002 996 and replaced the OEM front brake rotors late last year by a local shop (IMA Motors in Northern Virginia). They told me they used OEM replacement parts.

Took it back for them to look at it and they told me it is "normal" but couldn't find another car in the whole shop with rotor hats with worse rust condition than mine. And having been to numerous local PCA events, I could not recall seeing rotor hats with rust all over either!!

Then they told me they could only warrant the part for 3 months even though there is no possibility of wear and tear on the hat itself!

2 q's:
- Is this a product quality issue I needed to be concerned about (the car brakes just fine)?
- Could this be controlled by sandblasting the surface and painting over with rust resistant paint?

Many thx, all!!!

Yes and Yes. The rusting of the rotor hats is quite common. You can paint them with a better rust resistant paint which will slow down the process.

IMO they did not really use Porsche rotors. OEM does not equal Porsche parts. They maybe used OEM rotors (same manufacturer but not finished and branded as Porsche parts). I did the rear rotors on my car 3 weeks ago and used Porsche rotors from a dealer, I was pleasantly surprised to find that they were pre-painted on the hats and the cooling veins so they would not rust. Depending on what they told you when you took the car in for brakes: "We will use Porsche rotors" or "We will use OEM rotors" you may or may not have a case. In any regard you can remove the rotors, take off the rust and paint them to stop the rusting process. You might be able to do this adequately by just removing the wheel and taping off the rotor hat.

In any case rust on rotor hats is an aesthetic issue and does not affect performance.

Much of this is where you live. You live in a corrosive environment, with high humidity in the summer and high humidity in the winter. You can try painting them as some do.

Painting is easy relative to have to deal with warranty claims.

Thx, all!

They rust quickly and badly. Just sand them down and paint them. If you want you can touch them up each year. Problem solved.

See the link below for DIY to paint top (rotor) hats and lug nuts. The pics in the first post are crappy but there are better pics at the bottom of page 1 and on page 2.

Tim, I know I'm a noob with less than 12 months and a paltry number of posts, but I thought you were just lying about having owned a p-car... I'd think that was actually your car from the posts, but I know better Honda-man.

I guess it's okay they made you a lifetime member now...

Doug,

I am guessing that you never got the see a pic of my car after I finished modding it. Well, here you go!

The first pic is "before" the mods.
The second pic is "after" the mods.

Mods
  • 13" wheels with fat balloon tires
  • Jacked up 9" for some off roadin' fun
  • Quad "huntin' lights" on above the windshield
  • 'Vette side pipes
  • Ram air hood scoop
  • A few flames.... just for fun!
3rd pics shows the rear wiper I installed (you can't see it in the 2nd pic).

Pretty bad-***, huh? Yup, I was sorry to see that sweetie go!

Tims instructions are great. Here's a link with Deckman's job and my own. Two different methods, both great results. Note the extreme rust on my less than year old NOVA installed Porsche rotors.
