Default Brakes and rotors

What has been your experience with brakes and rotors?
How many miles have they lasted and how much have you paid at the dealer and local P-Car mechanic.

Thanks much and a happy and a healthy Thanksgiving to all.

Read the DYI on replacing pads. It's very easy IMHO, and I'm no grease monkey! No experience on the rotors yet and I have 72k miles.

Russ, you can skip the thread titled Changing Brake Pads-How not to do it.

Actually there is a link in the above thread to a brake pad DIY on RennTech.org that would be helpful.

My worst experience: I had a lip on my front rotors after about 15,000 miles, so I put on new pads (all the way around) and rotors (up front only). Went to 3 DEs, and on the way home from the last one, one front rotor was chewed up a little from vanishing brake pads, i.e., need new front rotors AGAIN. So, in the span of one month I had to get 2 sets of rotors and 2 sets of pads all the way around - and new fluid (twice). 2 front rotors and 4 sets of pads are about $1000 (including parts and labor) at my shop. DOH!

A "lip" on the brake rotor is pefectly fine and is normal. What is important is the thickness of the actual rotor. I believe that new 996 rotors(fronts) are 28mm thick when new and can be used until a minimum thickness of 26.5mm, measued in the middle of the rotor surface, not at the lip.

Also, pads are good until a minimum thickness of about 2mm - 3mm. However, if you track the car DO NOT let them get that thin.

Although the lip is normal, it is also a rough indicator of how much wear your rotor has. If you wear down more than about 2mm on a side, you should probably take them in to be looked at. Some lip is ok, too much lip and you should replace them. Saying you "lipped" your rotor implies you wore them down beyond factory specs. I would guess that 40-50 hours of on-track time should do it

Thanks for your detail.

So, what has been your experience for your first brake/rotor job- miles and cost?

Russ, I replaced mine at 25000 after a combination of street and track use. I did it myself because it is a very simple job.

I plan to continue watching your thread to see how many posts it takes to get your original question answered... haha!

The 1999 C2 daily driver I just purchased had 63K miles on it and (I suspect) original rotors. They were worn maybe .15 inches and the brakes did not feel super solid. I took a look at the calipers and they were great. Amazing piece of gear.

I had rotors and pads replaced all the way around at a non-dealer shop. Parts were $700-800 and it took about 3 hours labor. Don't have total cost because it was part of my purchase transaction.

Rotors are about $500 and pads can vary between $300-700 for all four wheels.
Even more if you want to splurge. Again, my numbers are for daily driving, not racing.

I'd like to hear what labor rates people are paying around the world.

Russ,

I've had the front pads changed at 30k miles as a "precaution" from an independent tech before a DE. I think they were only 50-75% worn but he thought that running on thinner pads at the track could cause heat damage to the calipers. I don't how much truth there is to this but I think he charged me about $240 to do what is essentially a 15 minute job including pads. The next time around I'll just get them myself. I was pressed for time as this was literally two days before the DE and I didn't want to take a chance on failing my tech inspection.

OEM brake parts are actually fairly priced when purchased online...

Front OEM rotors: $243

Front OEM pads: $121
http://e-partssales.com/Merchant2/me...6BrakesCarrera

Rear OEM rotors: $205 (less frequently changed than fronts)

Rear OEM pads: $88 (ditto...)

I purchased a brake bleeder as well and do my own flushes. Just don't get it on the paint!

My suggestion would be to go to Renntech.org and purchase a membership (one time fee). The dough you save by doing this yourself will pay for it many times over.

Good luck,

Tonger

Russ,

The pads are simple to replace. Have a shop cut the rotors and save yorself $$$. This is a DIY job.
